I want to spend about $500 on a pair of decent overheads. I want something that will capture lots of highs and doesn't really need to catch a ton of lows. The ability to capture really smooth high end is a must. Any suggestions?

Oktava MK012's, AT 4040's, AT 4033's...Peluso CEMC6's if you scrounge up a little more...

Eventually someone is gonna suggest the MXL 603s so I might as well be the one to do it, and I'll put in the KEL HM-1s for a flat response.

In that price range I'd recommend LDC's over SDC's. Red5 Audio RV8's have a nice, smooth, airy high end on them. They run about $199 each.

The Studio Projects B1's can do a pretty damn good job on OH's. And they're only $99 each.

i agree that the b1 has quite a smooth high end response, its hyped just enough for overheads to not need much EQing but not enough to make them sound brittle. i always bring one to band practices and set it about 3 feet back from the drum kit.

If you want to spend 500, you can do a lot better than the B1's in my opinion...

oh yea i whole heartedly agree, i was just saying that dot's suggestion wasn't so far fetched

A pair of Avenson omnis? They're supposed to be VERY neutral...not sure if that'll work for what you're looking for.

my 2 cents

Normally I wouldn't even think of disagreeing with DOT, but I think the B1 might be a bit too brittle unless you have a decent sounding room with a high enough ceiling (so the mic is closer to the drums than the ceiling).

With that said, if you can save a little more, check out a pair of Josephson C42s, Avenson Omni's, or Peluso CMC6s.

Here's the problem I got with this thead...

There's some mysterious drum mic dude who put out the idea that you must use a pair of mics on the drums and that you must put them up as overheads.

That said I sort of like a particular mic over the kit that sort of sounds like what PlnsMstkn4Jacob seems to want. It's the Blue Dragonfly.

Anyhow, if you must go with a matched pair, then I'd urge the Avensons. In the event you want cheaper, I'd urge the CAD M179. Neither one is spot on with the sound being described but they are good for this application. The room matters as much as anything on drums. I'm not one of these guys who tells you you need to treat a room to death. There are decent sounding rooms everywhere. For every decent room though I suspect there are four bad ones crying out for some sort of treatment.
