Hi there

Lately I've been experiencing 2 things:

first: when I mix down parts of a project or a single track and check "substitute track" (or something like that) the mixed down / substituted track SOMETIMES is not in the right position.

second: I record something to a backing and when I playback the recorded track and the backing, the recorded track is not in the right position. And here there are two different versions:
- the recorded track is optically in the right place but is playbacked delayed
- the recorded track is not even optically in the right place

where do I have to tweak?
btw: the second case happened today for the first time, dunno why.

I've ran into that too and it depends on what effects you're using or which track is using a CPU intensive effect like FASoft pitch shift or FaSoft EQ with the "tuner" function set on. Generally, an arena of different CPU intensive effects on a machine will constitute a goofy lag between the tracks.

For the tracks that are optically correct, it's probably an effect that causing the delay. For tracks that are not optically correct, you have to manually line it up using CTRL+ Left mouse to shift it left or right to compensate for the loss of time.

All in all a slower CPU will exaggerate these differences between tracks. What is your CPU load reading when your playing back the piece in question? If it's over 50% load then you're gonna have to either upgrade or do more "partial" mixdowns (i.e.- mix down tracks that sound okay as they are with effects to .wav and then import them back into your song file so you can free up CPU load)

Hope that helps.

thanks for the answer.

the cpu load hardly ever exceeds 15% or something like that. put you're right on the plugins: I think it mainly happens when I use waves plug-ins - and I think they're heavy although the cpu-load-indicator shows something different.

Glad you found out it was your plugin. You should be smooth sailing on only 15% CPU load but you dont need an overburdened CPU reading for a plugin to cause problems. I ran into a synch problem before when I ran one of my favorite DBAudioware plugins occasionally and it took me the longest time to figure out that particular plug was the culprit.

Plugins sure can be a "hit or miss" beast to deal with sometimes. You say you have Waves plugins and from what I'm looking at on their price sheet, they should damn skippy be running very smooth for as much as they're asking for them. I'd send their tech support an email if I were you and maybe they could explain what's happening better.

Anyway, glad you got to the bottom of your mystery and hopefully quicker than I did.

actually I didn't FIND OUT. It's just a guess because I never had that without the waves plugs. I checked out their site and there something similar was mentioned with protools and older versions of the waves plugs. well, I do have older versions (3.5) - got the old ones from a friend. I wouldn't buy such expensive stuff, although you definitely hear their price :) .

by the way I detected that the cpu load says something between 15 and 20% so I was understating a bit  .

have to try these partial mixdowns without using waves plugs. maybe it's n-track itself.
