Very Strange Problems With Audio Files In Cubase 15

I'm having strange and very frustrating issues with audio files in Cubase 15 pro.

Lets say that I have an audio track in my project. Upon playback I realize that there is some flaw in this file. Either I forgot to crossfade two sections and there is a pop, or maybe there is an unknown noise in the quiet part between the vocal. So, I fix those things and reexport it out of cubase and I save it as the same name.

What's happening is... when I drag this fixed version of the file back into the project, usually onto the same track, Cubase STILL plays back the original file, even though, that is not the file I'm seeing the sequencer, on the track? I'm seeing the new, fixed iteration of that audio file on the track but It's like Cubase saved a file that goes by that file name and it plays THAT original file back, no matter what I'm seeing in the sequencer/track. How do I stop this? It's driving me crazy.

Furthermore. There's even more confusing behavior.

I exported a fixed audio track out as a new audio file into a download folder on my desktop. This was exported as a MONO file. Once again, upon export, I gave it the same name that it had before I fixed it, as I want to replace it and i want it to have the same name, like Lead Harmony 1. If I drag this new, fixed file back into the project, putting it where the original was, it loads and comes into fine as a MONO file.

However. I moved that same file from one folder on my desktop into another folder on my desktop. Now... when i drag that same file into the cubase project FROM THE NEW WINDOWS FOLDER, Cubase places that mono file onto the track as a stereo file. How on earth does that happen. The track in the project is still a MONO track. I've not put the file through any processing or changes, I've just moved it from one folder to another folder. It's like once I move the file from one windows folder to another windows folder, it changes how Cubase interprets that file when I drag it into the project. What's going on here? This is so crazy!

If you have file imported and you tweak it, with maybe a fade in, the. When you export it, that file name is new. You can choose the file format, mono or stereo or lots of other things. If you then import that file it comes into a new track as the one with the fade in. However if the file name is already in the audio pool, cubase doesn’t import, it reuses the one already in memory. If you export with file name plus fade as the title, it will assume it is a new file and you get the treated file. Cubase also gives options for bringing stereo files into mono tracks and vice versa. I suspect you are just doing things a bit non-cubasey. I never have the problems you are having because I never need to export an individual track and bring it back in? Well, maybe occasionally if I want to perhaps edit it in audition, then put it back. Cubase will let you do lots of things, assuming you will be happy. If you try to do very odd things there are usually warnings? But it is possible to have a stereo track with mono audio perhaps moved from a different track. These display in little boxes usually to indicate they are a bit non standard. It’s really you doing what perhaps you did in a different DAW. Cubase just does things its way, but lets you do it. You do need to use unique file names or it can get very confusing. One thing though, I get warnings every time about file already exists in pool, do you want to reuse this? Or words to that effect. Have you disabled the messages?

Are you new tracks stereo by any chance?

Most are stereo, but some are mono. But there is a chance that I accidentally exported a mono as a stereo, then went back and reexported as a mono, but kept the name the same.

For the time being, i'm just putting some other character after the name so that it differentiates it. I wish I could figure out how to delete files from the pool that have been deleted from the project. I tried "delete unused media" in the pool, but nothing appears to happen. I've only even gotten this to work when I'm doing a project archive.

I know the pain, I have 30 years of hardrives full of files with the same file name because I’m too lazy to give the tracks proper titles before I hit record.

Ha! Took me ages to learn this! I only dabble, mostly with very short clips son sends me* or for my own interest (I recently recorded the output of my hearing aid with a Neumann ref mic!) Now when I mod a file in Samplitude I try to remember to differentiate it but also I "Save As" which puts it on the desktop by default. Then, when I can be arsed, I tidy the DT up!

*WHEN! He can be bothered! Kids eh?

Dave.
