So I open the package expecting a nice big sturdy case like the mxl 990 came in....but instead i see audio-technica has little small padded cases? i kinda liked the fact that marshall had those nic ebig ones so the mic is mor eprotected..or are the small little mic cases even better?

I was disappointed in the cases the AT's come in too. I guess they'd be ok of you never took them out of the studio but I wouldn't trust them to protect the mics on the road. I was looking at some high impact plastic pistol cases that might make good cases for them and even have room for the shock mount to stay on the mic. They had really good foam padding. I think they were like 8 bucks at where else? WALMART

If you have several mics, you can get a small padded tool case at lowes or home depot that works very well for mics.

I have looked at the Taskforce aluminum case at Lowe's for about $25. It is pretty nice. I did pick up one of the plastic "pistol" cases at Walmart and it really worked out well. Of course it isn't Aluminum but it provides a lot of protection and it was big enough for me to get the mic and the shockmount in it. I took the original molded foam out of the cardboard box the mic came in and cut out the foam in the plastic case to fit it. It is nice and snug. It is pretty nice and it was only $8.00 at Walmart. I like it so much I might get a couple more. Only drawback, no combination or key lock. It only has a place to put a small padlock.
