Adam P said:If you're into a lot of the new-school metalcore bands that people have mentioned here, you should get into some of the stuff that influenced them (I know this thread is about "newer bands", but if you haven't heard the older ones its all the same anyways). A lot of them play a bastardized version of the sound made popular mainly by At The Gates, who you should already listen to (but if you don't you should start). Some bands that play that style fairly well, in my opinion, are Black Dahlia Murder and Darkest Hour.
Bands like From Autumn To Ashes, Atreyu, and bands of that ilk are more into fashion than music, which I don't care for. I don't mind Bleeding Through, but their last record wasn't nearly as good as its predecessor. I personally think Avenged Sevenfold is horrible, not just because I've never liked their music, but because they denounced the whole hardcore/metalcore scene that made them hugely popular, saying they hate those people. They also claim to be the next Guns'n'Roses, which is ridiculous if you ask me. Their guitarist is good, though, I will give them that.
I think some of the new "American heavy metal" is ok in small doses. The Shadows Fall record Of One Blood is really good but I don't like anything they've done since. Same with the first Killswitch Engage record. Additionally, Brian Fair, Shadows Fall's vocalist, and the bassist of KSE used to be in a band called Overcast who was awesome. They were part of the whole 90s metalcore scene, which was a lot different (and a lot better) than whats out there today. Some of the big bands of that era would probably be Overcast, Botch, Coalesce, Jesuit, Converge, Cave In, Disembodied, etc etc. Actually, I've always thought that God Forbid was a solid band for as long as I've known them. The Coyle brothers' Megadeth influence definitely shows through on a lot of their material.
Someone mentioned Saetia, and while I'm not into them (I think Orchid is way better), they are what I'd consider to be "screamo" (what an awful term), as opposed to the crap that MTV and Alternative Press slap with the label. Emo (or emocore) began as a maturation of the late 80s hardcore bands who began to infuse a more melodic feel to their music as well as writing more introspective lyrics that often dealt with sociopolitical issues or personal things (by which I don't mean the boo hoo my girlfriend dumped me type of stuff). See bands like Embrace, Rites Of Spring, early Boysetsfire, Falling Forward, all the way to stuff that had a distinctly non-hardcore sound, bands like Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate, and so on. All of these bands are a much better representation of what "emo" really is than the bands that MTV calls emo. Check them out if you're not familiar.
If you want a metal band to listen to that is absolutely punishing in every regard, listen to the last two Pig Destroyer full length records. Also, check out the newest Municipal Waste record.
If you want a metal band that is totally 100% ridiculous and over the top, listen to Dragonforce.
