God Forbid, Killswitch Engage, Disinterment, Unearth, Atreyu, In Flames (older stuff probably)

Those are a few bands that have good drummers, and a few that kind of fit the style you are asking about. Let me know if you want some more, I could point you to tons more. Enjoy.

I like Arch Enemy too. They're kinda got that crazy iron maiden style :D

But in my opinion otep singer is still lord of the female growl.

I do really like both bands though :D

aw man you gotta hear children of bodom, one of the best modern bands out there, they are screamo but their band has so much talent, they're accually a very 80s band too, if you download music or w;e check out "follow the reaper" and "every time i die" amazing songs

and their guitarist has some major chops too

2nd on COB, but i think you might have already heard of em. are they really screamo? i dunno about that.....too many stupid categories nowadays. but they kick ass, good productions and great guitar work with the occasional keyboard solo, haha. good shit.

alright yeah maybe that wasnt a good word for it, the singer is a screamer, which is why i said that, but they arent senseless tasteless rock like most screamo bands, that have very good style, maybe very heavy rock? or heavy metal?

i always thought they were a metal band. isnt screamo like Emo, except they scream while they whine about stuff? i don't think Alexi is much of a whiner.

wow i like this thread ... gotta put in my two cents

if you like metalcore ... check out the album Undoing Ruin by DARKEST HOUR. revolver magazine claimed it to be the best album of the decade ... i dont know about that, but its ridiculously good!!
the chaotic sound has become big too with this type of music ... fear before the march of flames, circle takes the square, even the fall of troy are really good newschool style hardcore bands.
check out the blood brothers for something slightly more innovative than the rest.
get the song venus and bacchus by saetia ... they called themselves an indy/experimental band, theyre from back in '97 ... sound alot like the screamo (for lack of a better term) bands of right now
and you gotta check out Identity Crisis by THRICE to see what helped start this whole screamo trend (and realize it takes a good band to spawn 5000 shitty bands that all sound alike)

i want to go on ... but i'll cut myself off

In addition to Otep and System of a Down, I like Opeth and Lacuna Coil... but I'm not much of a heavy metal fan.

Exactly my understanding. It's like throwing a whining temper-tantrum.... I'm waiting for a video of oneo fthem wearing diapers, laying on the floor, and kicking while screaming his song. :p :p

If you're into a lot of the new-school metalcore bands that people have mentioned here, you should get into some of the stuff that influenced them (I know this thread is about "newer bands", but if you haven't heard the older ones its all the same anyways). A lot of them play a bastardized version of the sound made popular mainly by At The Gates, who you should already listen to (but if you don't you should start). Some bands that play that style fairly well, in my opinion, are Black Dahlia Murder and Darkest Hour.

Bands like From Autumn To Ashes, Atreyu, and bands of that ilk are more into fashion than music, which I don't care for. I don't mind Bleeding Through, but their last record wasn't nearly as good as its predecessor. I personally think Avenged Sevenfold is horrible, not just because I've never liked their music, but because they denounced the whole hardcore/metalcore scene that made them hugely popular, saying they hate those people. They also claim to be the next Guns'n'Roses, which is ridiculous if you ask me. Their guitarist is good, though, I will give them that.

I think some of the new "American heavy metal" is ok in small doses. The Shadows Fall record Of One Blood is really good but I don't like anything they've done since. Same with the first Killswitch Engage record. Additionally, Brian Fair, Shadows Fall's vocalist, and the bassist of KSE used to be in a band called Overcast who was awesome. They were part of the whole 90s metalcore scene, which was a lot different (and a lot better) than whats out there today. Some of the big bands of that era would probably be Overcast, Botch, Coalesce, Jesuit, Converge, Cave In, Disembodied, etc etc. Actually, I've always thought that God Forbid was a solid band for as long as I've known them. The Coyle brothers' Megadeth influence definitely shows through on a lot of their material.

Someone mentioned Saetia, and while I'm not into them (I think Orchid is way better), they are what I'd consider to be "screamo" (what an awful term), as opposed to the crap that MTV and Alternative Press slap with the label. Emo (or emocore) began as a maturation of the late 80s hardcore bands who began to infuse a more melodic feel to their music as well as writing more introspective lyrics that often dealt with sociopolitical issues or personal things (by which I don't mean the boo hoo my girlfriend dumped me type of stuff). See bands like Embrace, Rites Of Spring, early Boysetsfire, Falling Forward, all the way to stuff that had a distinctly non-hardcore sound, bands like Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate, and so on. All of these bands are a much better representation of what "emo" really is than the bands that MTV calls emo. Check them out if you're not familiar.

If you want a metal band to listen to that is absolutely punishing in every regard, listen to the last two Pig Destroyer full length records. Also, check out the newest Municipal Waste record.

If you want a metal band that is totally 100% ridiculous and over the top, listen to Dragonforce.

Outside of Tomahawk, none of the bands mentioned do anything at all for me. Just my opinion. Some ones I would recommend though would be 400 Blows, Ex-Models, Vaz, the Heroine Sheiks, Bellini and Deerhoof. There are a handful of really good bands out there nowadays that actually don't sound like Iron Maiden mixed with Jawbox. As always, current trends are generally a complete mess of bands that seem to put all their efforts into sounding like everyone else. Yawn.

Deerhoof's recordings are to die for. Big, huge analog sounds.

One of my younger brother's friends, Mike Fellows, was in "Rites of Spring". I personally never really cared for most of that stuff - I mean, I'm a Metal head.
I'll give you an example:

Trivium "Gunshot to the head..." I don't really cared about the first 2:40 seconds of the song. At that point is about the time he actually starts singing - and I LOVE it from that point on. I really kind of hate the whole screaming thing - I studied voice for a few years, and i love good singers - which is one of the reason most of the so called "metal" (i.ew., "Nu-metal") for the last 15 years has been of no use to me - I quit listening to most american bands, because so few of them actually had singers. I mean - I started listening to Kamelot - they are from here in Florida - their singer is from like, Iceland or Finland - it's pretty sad when you have to go to another freaking Continent to get a singer.

Are you a fan of Blind Guardian?

Love them.

Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Nightwish, etc. all that kind of stuff.

Essentially, it's bands that grew up with the same influences that I had that I tend to like.

But I'm also interested in some of the newer bands that are coming out - preferably without the screaming thing. I mean, if I wanted that - I'd just break out a Dimmu Borgir CD and get the real deal. LOL

You'd probably love Dragonforce then, if you're not already into them.

OOO! Nightwish!

...Nemo my name, forevermore....

How new are we talking? Less than 3 albums, I guess? Post 2000?

I really dig mewithoutYou <3
