If you suck as a recording engineer no microphone will fix that.

I'd like to add on to that to say if "talent" is no good, then no microphone will fix that either. I say as recording engineers we only need to meet the level of the people we're recording. If they can't find middle C on a piano (or don't know what a piano is) then your gear should reflect that.

(okay so I'm just kidding, but can you imagine putting together a mic package based on the quality of the band? "Well you can actually play, so you get the good mics I've hidden in the back")

I might be able to score one for $750.00. Is that a good deal? I think it is, but not sure.
Great deal! If you don't take it, let me know and I'll take it :D

Its actually also a good investement. In a few years from now these mics will cost much more and you can easily sell it almost without loss. I remember that I bought an M930 factory-direct for $600.- when it came out a few years ago -- now they cost twice as much!

Hey! I have first dibs!!!!!
:)

Get a Gefell M930 -- its similar to the TLM but better in many aspects.

But the Gefell UMT70 or MT71 are even more like a classic Neumann because they have the M7 capsule....smooooth, silky, creamy. Like the TLM103 the Gefell MT71S and UMT70S are transformerless. The M930 is close, but is a little hypier in the highs than the MT71.

But dude, if you can get an M930 for $750, and its not broken or hot, do it...NOW!

as for pres, I have some m930 samples I can send you..(DAV maybe millennia?)

Don't want to hijack this thread, but what's the difference between a UMT71S (which I have) and a MT71S?

Have you tried both?
What stands out in the SE Z5600A?

i believe the mt71s has an output transformer and the umt71s is an improved transformerless design.

What happened to the money-is-no-object idea????????????

they are both transformerless. umt=multiple patterns. MT=card only

I didn't think the Gefell 930 was compromising.
Anyway, it beomes an object when it's all gone so I decided to scratch that idea.

Just another perspective about the tlm103 - Al Schmidt (Diana Krall, Steely Dan, Michael MacDonald, etc, multiple grammy winner) said that he thinks the tlm103 is a fantastic microphone. I've also read that it's used often for orchestral recording.
This isn't to discount anyone's stated opinion, or that there aren't as good if not better for the money, but just offering another perspective.
Btw, I do have a 103 that was used mainly for my ex-wife's vocals. Since we split I haven't been able to bring it out because of the association with her. But recently I worked on an unfinished mix of the last project I did with her and felt impressed on how well the tlm103 captured her voice. I know intimately what her voice sounds like and that mic was perfect for her.

I think the general consensus is that the TLM 103 is not a bad mic, it's just not a particularly good one (especially for the price).

However, certain mics shine on certain people, I suppose. If it was perfect for your ex-wife's voice, then it was probably worth the investment. It seems like more often than not that's the exception to the rule with this mic though.

Maybe it's time to bring the mic back out and use it inside a kik drum, eh? :D

I find the exception to be when it doesn't make someone's voice shine, that is if it's a beautiful voice to start with.

Mr. Zeke - you hit this right on. What I was trying to say is that it "captured" her voice - it didn't make it.

That might not be a bad idea - as long as her picture is pasted to the bass drum head where the beater does it's thing ;)
