hey,

my drummers looking to invest in some recording gear,
so far wehave a sm57 and a sm58
it has been reccomended that we get 2 condensor mics and a good bass drum mic, any idea whatsome good condensor mics are and how to position them to obtain a good sound.... obviously werenot expecting better than studio quallity but we'dstilllike a good sound...

any help would be cool

MXL 603's for overheads. Shure Beta 52, AKG D112, or Audix D6 (depending on your taste) for bass drum. Use your 57 on the snare. Check out this thread.

Ditto on the MXL603 for overheads. XY position over the drummer's head is a good place to start and will eliminate phase problems. XY basically has the two mic capsules as close together as possible without touching and each mic pointed 90 degrees from each other in a "V". Adjust the postion and angle of the two until you get a pretty balanced (panning and levels) of the entire kit. Bring up your kick and snare drums to accent those drums and you should have a pretty good drum sound.

I've done the same (xy), but try it with LDC's in front of the set about four feet up...

But for SDC's I use Oktava MK012's - or if you're on a budget, try the Behringer ECM8000's. I had a pair and they worked great for it! I just sold my pair though...

I usually use the tips from the SAE site for my best drum sounds... http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html
