You would be surprised to learn that this mic does actually play an important role in the medical field, in much the same ways that you have stated.
It is used intranasally, with the device being slowly pushed through the nostril until it reaches the nasopharynx. Recordings made during this process are then plotted for volume and frequency parameters, and from this a quantitative determination of the patients pain threshold can be extrapolated.
Secondly, in cases of sigmoid colon and rectal obstruction, this mic is inserted through the anus and moved proximally to evaluate the quality of the borborigmi. From this it can often be determined where the obstruction is, and, in fact, in many cases the mic actually relieves the obstruction, and no further procedures are necessary.
These are just two of the miracles of modern medicine possible with what some would consider to be a throwaway peice of audio equipment.
