I've just heard that the price of the Marshall MXL 603 "may" be going up dramatically very soon.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Of course I'm too broke to buy any right now.

...and sales will go down. So will the profit curve.

Just to spite them, I'm going to go buy an MC012. Actually, I was going to buy the Oktava anyway and pair it with my MXL 603s.:D

Bummer. Humm, I wonder what their reasoning for the increase is... any ideas?

It seems to me, then, that people will flock in droves to the SP C4s when they come out. Either that or that Rode matched pair (NT5?).

everyone should have jumped on them at ShreveAudio for $49 each......

but wouldnt a mxl990 @ $69 with case and shockmount do just as well and be more versatile?

From a marketing standpoint, I think they should have sold them for more to begin with. They probably wouldn't have had too much trouble getting it.

Good news for Oktava, I'm assuming. :D

BTW -- that's good thinking, Gidge.

i've always wondered why people haven't flocked to the NT5's to begin with. i love them as overheads and on acoustic guitar. they're a bit more than the mc12's and the mxl603 (about $300), but they beat the hell out of either of them.

I soppose it's a matter of tate, but I always thought the next step up in terms of SDCs was somewhere along the lines of the AKG C451B. Perhaps the Neumann km184, to an extent, although that's debatable. Certainly THE, earthworks, and Schoepps make some SDC's I wouldn't kick out of my mic locker. :D

But honestly, I wouldn't even say that any of those "beat the hell out of" the 603 or the 012. I think in a side-by-side blind comparison, you'd be surprized at how narrow the gap really is.

yeah, maybe you're right.

hey by the way, i noticed there're a bunch of people on here from the chicago area. i live in rogers park and was just wondering if any of you guys are nearby...maybe were're neighbors and don't even know it!

I'm in Bucktown.

Buck62 lives on the South Side, and Stone Piano works at the Highland Park Guitar Center. A few more I know I'm forgetting.

I'm always up for getting together for jam sessions.

That's what I did, and I tried to encourage everyone to jump on them. Oh well, you snooze you lose. :D

i jumped!

i listened to ya DJL and grabbed 2 at that price in a heartbeat. glad i did! in fact, i wish i'd grabbed 4!

been using them mostly as "room mics" to make stereo tapes of my band's practices, which they do a fantastic job of--really looking to take them to a club here in town and make some audience tapes with em and see how they hang against some mk4v's and km184s others use for that chore (gotta get one of those MAudio Firewire 410's first, though). one i amass more mics for amps, i'll be using them as overheads for my drumkit, but gotta amass more mics first. if anyone's got any sm57/8's or sennheiser 835's/845's they're looking to get rid of cheaply.....*cough* *cough*. ;-)

also recorded some acoustic stuff with em (fingerstyle and pick-driven pieces) with my Martin D15 and was extremely impressed at the sound i got (going into a wackie 24*4->audiophile 2496). The B1 i'd been using (via VTB1) wasn't anything to shake a stick at and sounds great, but the MXLs are just plain nicer to listen to on this guitar through this chain. wish i had more inputs on the computer, i'd throw the B1 in as a room mic. soon. :-)

either way, at $108 for 2 fantastic mics shipped, you can't beat that. hate to see the price go up, but these really are good budget mics and more folks shoulda listened. ;-P

made some DIY shockmounts for them too, using some cross-stitch hoops and ponytail elastics.....gonna try to take some digipix and post that this weekend maybe, if i can get around to it. the mounts work far better than i'd hoped.

Wade,

What diameter hoops did you use?

As a test, I've had some hair elastics stretched out at the anticipated size for a few weeks..........they seem to have lost a bit of their tension, but I don't think it's enough to be a problem and those things should always be available while ever les femmes continue to wear their hair long......not to mention the guys too:D

You guys should checkout the DIY shock mounts on page 26 of the issue 33 TapeOp. :) In a nutshell... it's plastic PVC pipe with hair ties, and I think a member of this BBS came up the the idea first.

I'm also in Rogers Park! No foolin! Just right off the Loyola campus...

Hey DJ,

Yeah, someone here did make some up........there are pics of them at this site...........http://www.longsoughtfor.org/postn/...ame=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

Is that Tape Op thang available online or is it print on paper only?

I intend making mine out of aluminium tube and I have come up with a way to attach it to a normal mic clip to fit to a stand. I must pull my finger out and make them as soon as I solve the problems we're having with cars.

ausrock, I have the TapeOp issue, but I think I've seen it online too... but can't remember where the URL is, sorry. Oh, and the plastic PVC pipe had one of those spring type of mic clips that Harvey is selling glued to it so you can mount it to a mic stand.

PS... I'd tried to return your PM a week ago or so.... but your box was full?

This is the spring type of mic clip that's glued to the DIY plastic PVC shock mount...

Here's where to order the clip from...

Well not necessarily.... What I mean is we are bringing back the Joemeek line of microphones, known as the Meekrophone.

Without getting many of the "other" manufacturers in an uproar, Feilo is making most of the mics for PPA, Cascade, Nady, SE Electronics, ADK, and many others. At one time even for Marshall. Now before Larry gets into an uproar, I contacted Feilo and asked them directly. They said they make all of ADK's current mics with the exception of three or four models. So, this is what they said and where I got the information.

As for Marshall, well all they did was take a few Feilo engineers and move them to another building to build mics for Marshall direct. So if you wish to call that your own factory, then go ahead. Hell, just ask Brent, he designed and worked for Marshall from day one.

Anyway, Feilo also built the Joemeek line of mics, so we decided to bring them back. Bascially the Joemeek JM27 is the exact same thing as the 603, and Brent will have waved his hands over the new JM27, so you will still be able to get that mic, and we decided to sell it for less than Marshall does!!!!!

We are 60 days out guys..so hang in there. No, they are no C4's, but they are 603's...Grab a look CLICK HERE
