ive seen some tascam midi tape sync units floating around lately that are compatible with my recorder, what exactly do these do? I know the technical definition, but what would they allow me to do differently?

Are you talking about a SMPTE to MTC convertor?

I have a couple of them and they make it possible to sync a sequencer like Cubase, or a DAW like Nuendo to a tape machine.

We use that for drum machines and keyboards, or record a couple of tracks into Nuendo, Cubase SX, Cool Edit Pro or whatever, edit the tracks and put them back on the 2" multitrack.

We also have a Tascam ES50/51 sync box that makes it possible to run two multitrack tapemachines in sync.

I think this is an older FSK to MTC convertor that makes it possible to sync a sequencer to a tapemachine. But it works with FSK, which is obsolete.

If you want to sync a sequencer to tape you'll need a SMPTE to MTC convertor like the JL Cooper PPS2 which is the cheapest.

It also generates SMPTE, which is an analog code that contains time in hrs, minutes, seconds and frames per second.
The PPS2 standard generates 30 f/s.

You 'stripe' one of the tracks of the tapemachine with SMPTE and feed this back to the PPS while recording or/and playback other tracks.

A sequencer or DAW will know in a split second where the tape runs in SMPTE time and run in sync with the machine, so you can record the drums or whatever you like to tape and all other things into your DAW.

The MTS-30 is a MIDI to FSK translator with Song Position Pointer. It can be used to sync any MIDI computer/sequencer/drum machine to tape. It CANNOT be used by itself to sync two tape machines.

You would need to add a device such as the MMC-100 (Midi Machine controller), which has a chase sync feature and an interface for the Tascam tape serial port. Or just get an MTS-1000 Midiizer, which can do everything by itself.
