I'm a guitar player but I'd like to pick up a super cheap bass just to lay down some scratch bass tracks during the songwriting process.

I'm just looking for something in the $150-200 range.

I've come across the Squier P-Bass and Danelectro has their Rumor bass. Both of which are in that price range.

Any recommendations on picking one over the other?

Thanks,
Shag Fu

The P-bass, It's a standard, sound wise.
And it looks good on anyone. ;)

in addition to shagfu's question, what's a good cheap bass amp? would getting the squier p-bass package which comes with a 15 watt amp be a good idea? i'm looking to pick up bass in addition to guitar... thanks

If the amp in the p-bass package is as good as the amp in my telecaster package, stay away from it.
I put the amp on a bookshelf. It's just sitting there, being cute.

Ive played basses in that price range by Peavey,Yamaha,Ibanez and Fender and they were all quite decent......

i picked up my Fender Squier Affinity bass for $129 and it does the job.....

I picked up a sweet Samick for $350 Australian which would be about $175 US i think. It was 2nd hand but it was worth it! iv had it for about 4 years now.
you can get some good deals second hand. i take the ones your looking at are new though??

with the bass amp it depends what your planning on using it for.

the only thing you can use a 15 watt amp for is practise and you can pretty much practise without it!!

save a bit of money and get a descent amp!

i have a 150 watt marshall bass amp.

picked that up for about $700 couple of months old. came from the shop for $1400

The trick is buying second hand and being prepared to wait.

my friend got about $4500 worth of bass gear for about $800 and the guy he got it from, bought it brand new. he thought his calling in life was to be a rockstar so he bought all this gear, and then he changed his mind, he was all religious or something!
the trick is looking for the suckers!!

that sounds bad i know but youll get a good deal.

peace

heh i think i'll hold off on the bass for a little while. although i do want to get into it, i'm having trouble coming up with the money for all my guitar equip :D thanks for the links though Monty and the advice Balshazza.

Thanks for all the feedback.

For now, I'll probably pick up a Squire P-Bass or that Essex mentioned in the link.

I'm gonna try and sweet talk my bass player friend to see if I can borrow his Zon bass after I've finished scoring the bass parts :)

OLP has a 5 string musicman copy thats decent and close to that price.

Since my soon to be "EX" smashed my P-Bass (American :( )
I had to replace it with something........
I picked up a "no-name" hand made Bass by a company called SX.....It plays and records super nice......$179.00....plus tax... :)
