If your really into that stuff from the 60's 70's, then yeah, there is the cool sound, the good songs, but underneath that, is the innovative spirit behind the sound and the playing. The first blues-rock guitarists were innovaters in every sense of the word. Listen, learn and get intimate with that stuff, but dont just repeat history ;)

So true, and we all know this eh?

It seems that today we are affraid of trying something else, something a little different.

Of course you could try, and not many people will get it, eventually some people will get it, then more and more will get it, and then some others will start copying you...............Well that is what has been going on all the time, so you need to know for yourself where your stand today:

Are you the copycat or innovator?.........or perhaps Provoker?? :D

Cheers,

basically, when electric guitar was first introduced people played it as if it was and acoustic, approached it that way.
Hendrix came along and said wait a minute boys, this is how you play an electric guitar. I believe he was the first "Electric Guitarist."
Did he have blazing speed-no
did he have incredible technique-no
did he have a grasp of music theory-no
did he smoke everyone on the scene-yes

Certainly one of the first who used a lot of effects.

Most of the guitarist before him just used some kind of overdrive.

Your observation of "playing the electric as an acoustic" is an interesting one. A lot of beginners do that as well, as they have not yet developed the skills to sustain notes, bend them and let them howl. For some of these techinques you may need some extra tools, likes some extra gain pedals, but a lot of it is in the hand of the player as well [ and using your amp well ]

I believe you know all about this with your Ampegs Jerry? :)

even though there were guys like Jeff Beck (one of my favs) using distortion etc the guitar was still being approached as if it were an acoustic. I believe hendrix was the first to really play an electric guitar.

I also agree. No one made the sounds he did, which really made his song writing very unique. Before, there was fuzz, and all of a sudden, there was screaming wall of sound. Totally changed what you were used to hearing. He could still play clean and smooth (All Along The Watchtower), but really kicked ass on things like Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).....That still has one of the nastiest rythum guitar tones.
