Good stuff robgreen, I like the versions that aren't blandly copying the original.

I love this version. You've got a great voice, and the slightly bouncy pub style take on the tune works perfectly. Nice work, sir!

Hey WhiteStrat - wow, thanks mate. I never thought I'd get a comment like that!

There's a couple of interesting takes on this song in here. It's a song that's been getting increasingly overblown with every cover version, so good to see that punctured somewhat - I never thought I'd hear the song reinterpreted in the way Greg and Jonny have done it :D

Had a couple of spare hours this afternoon, so figured I'd give it a quick go myself. Had designs on adding a few instruments into the mix, but as it is I got lazy and settled for writing a different verse, messing about with the other lyrics and just backing it with an acoustic.

It's rough as old boots and I'm not sure I got a single Hallelujah in tune, but it is what it is. And for the sake of posterity, here it is:

Love this version. You've got a great singing style (I think I've compared you to White Town in the MP3 clinic before). I find the breathy type of voice impossible to get right myself, but you do it really well - I love how it seems to indicate you might break into a more belting tone, it kind of builds tension.

I think if you're going to go with the original arrangement of this, you're kind of going against Jeff Buckley and you've got to have something special to be compared favourably. And who wants to hear another version of that arrangement again - it's been done hundreds of times before by professional singers and studios.

Agree completely. I wouldn't know Jeff Buckley from Jeff Foxworthy, but I know that this song has been done to death by much better better artists than most of us, so in my mind it was a no brainer to stand it on it's end and those versions sound best to me. You can't improve on the song by just copying the original or it's most famous cover version. So do it differently.

Hey, thanks a lot both of you, you're both very kind. I've got to say, I'm surprised that you think it works, but I usually hide among fuller arrangements too so part of it might be the nakedness of just guitar backing.

Regarding the singing, it's funny that the White Town comparison does come up quite a lot - unusual for someone who was in effect a one hit wonder to have such a memorable singing style. I guess it's just what comes naturally to you - I couldn't pull off your style of singing which works as well, and I certainly don't have the lungs (or tuning) for Greg's!

I agree that the last thing the world needs is another carbon copy of the Jeff Buckley version, but with more glossy production and less interest. These reality singing shows have promoted the view that there's only one valid singing style over the last couple of years and it's one that values technical ability above interest. I caught a cover of Damien Rice's Cannonball on something like X Factor last year and it was probably the single worst thing I've ever heard - every line had a big warbly flourish and every word was about fifteen syllables long.

I can't say it bothers me especially as these shows aren't aimed at the likes of me and the type of music they produce has no influence on my life but by God it was bad!

It's a fun challenge anyway. I haven't had chance to listen to all the postings yet - hopefully there are a couple more interpretations to come out before we're done :listeningmusic:

I made this recording drunk in a noisy bar with a recorder in my pocket.
Somewhere in the middle i singed hallelujah. Sort of.
Starts at 27:00.
Cheers:guitar:

I tried to make a homerecorded version yesterday. I could hit the high note in "composing" and "broken" , just missed all the other ones.
Will post it once i get it right.

Nice versions here.
I liked the folksy ones and greg's of course.
Not sure how can we vote though.

I vote we don't have a vote. All in agreement say 'aye'.
