Let's Get Jiggy Again! A Masterpiece!!!

Hmmmm... Well, I must say you certainly have a turn of phrase knack, don't you... :)

"Get up offa that big fat beefy whitebread thing..."

You gotta love that... :)

It's sort of an interesting juxtaposition, such urban phrasing sung by someone, so, well, caucasian sounding. :) It's ironic, considering the lyrical content. :) I don't mean that as a slam, just an observation. The progression is standard 12 bar blues, and the melodic theme is essentially your standard blues riff off the sharp 9th, so we can't really comment much there, so we'll talk about production.

Frankly, it's a little cluttered. Then again, so was most 70s funk/disco/early rap so I guess that's OK. But, the drums were a tad uneven, the quantization on the ride at the beginning didn't match the kick quantization. Once the main groove kicks in, it smooths out. Nice lead work; and it's balanced well with everything too.

Not really my thang, genre-wise but I can certainly appreciate what you were shooting for. Sly Stone would have liked the wah wah. :)

Cheers!

Let's Get Jiggy Again! How cool to write a sequel to a homerec hit song! I really like the groove you have going!

All of your stuff is very interesting. I actually saw this post last night, but had to go ... I couldn't wait to listen today because I knew it was going to be something cool, and it doesn't dissapoint!

I like the vibe you have going. It sounds like you are just having fun. Mixwise sounds okay to me. Great 70's flashback there.

Keep it up! :)

I'm jealous too. Bear - I'd appreciate 97% accuracy on my next post. Even if you tear me a new one.

jeap - I though it was a pretty cool song. As usual, you have a gem line here and there. Liked the lead guitar sound.

Am I reading too much into this or am I the only one who noticed... Chubby Checker had a hit with "The Twist". A year or so later he had another single titled something like "Twist Again" which had lines similar to the "2nd Jiggy". Intentional?

3M wins second prize!!!!!

woo hoo!!!

lets twist again is a great tune. really i copped left and right on this one. the intro is straight from jimi hendrix axis bold as love's "little miss lover" as is the rest of the drum and bass part.

you cant copyright that stuff so im safe. you can only copyright lyrics and melody so i think im safe there...

hahahah.

yeah i love the twist again thing but i couldnt say "last summer" cause the other jiggy is from last month.

I guess ... as it is with bears ... you have to make a bear mad ... so that he comes after you and gives you what you deserve for even coming so close to 400lb predator ... :D ...

oh wait ... I was supposed to listen to the song ...

jeap ... is that 3mic setup on the drumms ? though hihat is little to the side so I don't know ... cool wah ...

cheers

ive seen his pic over at harmony central forum and you may be right about the 400 lbs!

(stop that!!! - ok)

the 3 mic setup is something i was so thrilled about. the peanut butter song had a decent drum sound but not enough lows so i put the 3 large condensers on the set. each mic was about 3 ft away one in front of the kick and the others in front of the set a little above the tom rims.

i spent a whole week recording drums and loved the sound but anyone who has listened to the stuff i drummed on knows i cant keep time.

i reluctantly turned to a drum machine which i ran through a varitone to cut out some "punch". that sucked.

now i have a sampler and i sampled my drums with large condensers at about 3 ft. i play the hat and cymbals seperately and sequence the drums.

so thats the sound i was getting with the 3 mic technique. actually its somewhat better since i can disengage the snares when i hit the toms for sampling.

the sequencer on the dr sample is very primitive. i wind up playing phrases in realtime and then i go back and edit out any bass drum "flams". kinda sucks.

i record the cymbals and hat with large condensers and yes i did pan the hat over a little with the maraca opposite.

ive been playing strictly new jack swing on the hihat lately which i think is the superior hihat pattern for goofy music!

:)

thanks for commenting fed!

wow....after reading thru all the posts, and even stepping in some bear shit, this was nothing that I was expecting. I guess the closest comment was made about some blues.. I couldn't 'hear' the Hendrix stuff...or even the Nugent stuff...which admittedly sucked me right in for a listen. The lead sound reminds me of some of the old "Bubble Puppie"....remember them?

Kinda a frat, dance song....you know...like "Animal House"... people doing the "Crock-i-dile"

jiggy....that's a new term to me too!

g-day.

ok just the fact that my name appears in this thread pretty much assure that i 'll reply..lol

man..how do you control all the stuff goin on in this sucker..any more than a guitar and bass maybe drums..and im sweating...
that drum loop is killer...btw.
those vocals are..sooooo. right on the cusp of full-on,,hilarity....very cool...i waish i could write "fun",,stuff ...
that lead guitar in the end is sweet too ....man those keys on the break,,,thats off a video game i played as akid....i know they are!! come on they are right??...:D ...well you can just stop recording anything else because .....

THATS RIGHT YOU JEAP HAVE MADE THE DOWNLOAD LIST..!!!!!
YOU WILL BE SHARING HARDDRIVE SPACE WITH SUCH HRDC STANDOUTS AS.........CRAWDAD."MOGULS OF MALIBU"...AND MACLE.."WHATEVER THE HELL IT WAS CALLED"!!!!....DREAMS DO COME TRUE....RIGHT HERE ON HOME RECORDING DOT.COM......

right on man,
sincerely,
....the next corey hart:D

woo hoo! the download list!!!!!

i got a sampler for my drums!!! theres no way in the world i could get that sound from a regular drum machine. the syncopated snare is a rimshot. i always wanted to play rimshots on the backbeat but i can only get a good one like once every 6 tries.

the keyboard sound is "church organ" and i just slid around on a whim... at first i was playing trills but it didnt fit. it must be a flashback to an old video game!!!!

one thing is i record on a standalone - akai dps16 - and its so easy to keep doing takes over and over. basically im practicing while im recording, working out parts, and trying ideas. when it fits i move on to the next part. the guitar parts take a while which is good cause i need the practice!

on this thing i used all 16 tracks and wanted more! the only thing i doubled up on was the drums.

who's corey hart????

He left..you can read all about it here in a thread titled Calling it quits

kinda sad huh? hes a good guy and a war vet with a lot of feeling. he needs a simpler setup. a tape deck. i wish i could have recommended that.

thanks kramer for the link.

ive been wondering where he was...

beefy would work but its "goofy whitebread thing"

i love ebonics and i dig mixing them with my own cracker jargon. i saw on tv once a white guy say he got "dished" instead of dissed and ive used that in conversation to great effect.

yep the sharp 9th but also on the 4 and 5 chords we have 9th chords and then add the 4th along with another 7th to make an 11th!

i left the turnaround off this time because "white boys" always have a turnaround.

the drums are sampled and the ride is recorded regularly but youre right i tried to do couplets which really dont work there. i didnt want to do it over (lazy).

im surprised nobody has mentioned that my guitar fills are out of time! i did that on purpose and when i listened back it sounded like some of that dirty trumpet playing from the swing era.

thanks for the evaluation!

im working up some jazz but for now im doing the simple stuff. i have 2 killer progressions that i learned from mickey baker's old book of hot jazz guitar. melody progressions that ive played thousands of times.

:)

Yeah, a lot of people begged him to stay but he's one of those people who doesnt mince words and when he says he's gonna do something,he's gonna do it...I doubt he ever came back to read the posts to him in that thread....maybe he'll catch the recording bug again someday soon....he does need something like a simple porta studio to work with instead of computer based stuff....I dont even fiddle with the computer stuff...I use a stand alone unit similar to what you use.....computer recording just adds a level of stress to the process for me that I dont need!;)

Maybe one day I'll be able to tackle some of the mastering/tweaking software etc...I know it would help my mixes a lot.

Has this song really been here for 5 years?

Interesting recording. The song didn't really do anything for me, but maybe I'm just too white.

fun thread! :D

I dig it jeap.. I like your lava lamp flow.. don't like the pitch shifted voice, but anything I would complain about would probably be preference..

diggable..

BTW - I would choose 97% accuracy.. ;)

Hey Jeap,
A whole shitload of fun here. .....cool song. ....and very cool vocs. Lotsa room for a funky bassline in there......

great stuff, G

pretty dull this one.. falling asleep vocals, and a too loud guitar. Feels like 15 minutes after 3 minutes..

hmmm. maybe i can i can cop even more and nobody will know! woo hoo! i know jimi wouldnt mind cause he copped even worse than i do. he swiped melodies from songs he covered. ha ha ha.

i have no idea where the ted nugent thing came from. well i mean it came from the king but i dont know where he got it...

ive never heard of bubble puppies!

fun factor = 9!!! woo hoo! thanks!!!
