Either your monitors are lying to you or you aren't listening to what you are doing. Like the last poster, I almost never boost any low end on the kick.

They must be lying to me because I swear it sounds decent! All I've done in that instance is boosted:

6db @ 62
4db @ 2.5k
6db @ 4k

As well as cut some frequencies between 200 to 500, as well as totally cut out 30-50.

This is frustrating. I might try mixing through another stereo. Other than that theres not much I can do. This is just a crappy first demo, but I dont want it sound *that* bad.

Yeah, your monitors definitely are lying. The kick sounds like a cardboard box.

Also the guitars sound really distant, which might be a result of all this phase tool plug in stuff or whatever you're doing with copying and pasting all those tracks.

The 'drum only' track only had drums in it if thats the one youre listening to. I've messed with the guitars to but I'm not doing anything until I hear these pieces of shit through another stereo.

If you just get rid of the boost at 62hz, you might have something.

What EQ are you using?

Will do. That band seems to be the only one giving the kick a decent thump though. My speakers havent got the best low frequency response methinks, which would be why theyre bassing out at your end.

Just using the standard 30 band EQ in Cool Edit. Should I consider getting a plugin? How about a few tips for messing with some compression (or should i just stay away from it)?

You would get better results with a parametric EQ instead of a graphic. That's why everyones advice wasn't working all that well, we were assuming a parametric. In order to do it on a graphic, you would need to make a smiley face starting at 200hz, to a low point at around 400hz and tapering up to center around 1k. Leave everything below 150hz at 0. Above 1k gradually go up to peak around 6db up at 4k and come back down to center by 10k. The idea is to make gradual changes across the frequencies, not just bring one fader up or down.

Don't worry about making the kick thump. Kicks thump anyway, you need attack.

Thanks mate whenever I post something on here you're always giving me a hand (alongside the others like Southside Glenn and many others I cant remember). Youve been really helpful. Any tips or tutorials anywhere on how to use a parametric EQ?

I'll have a play round with the parametric and the graphic EQ and see what I can come up with over the weekend.

Heres another drum track with some parametric EQ applied. If nothing else I think this kick is a lot more defined and less boxy than the other.

Good, bad, or ugly? Let me know.

This is a Nasum cover I did. It has four seperately recorded guitar tracks (I didnt intentionally set out to do that) - and it makes a world a difference in the mixing. I'll be doing this as a standard from now on.

Ick, closer but still ick. Still a little boomy, are you sure it's tuned right? You need more attack, almost to the point where you'd think it's too much. I'm afraid that boominess would muddy up your tracks a lot.

Yeah I mean, my speakers blow. No low end response. I'm about to go and mix a bit at a mates house to see if that helps at all. I heard my mixes on his stereo the other day and they just sound like boomy shite smothered by guitars. I'll have to go again. Thanks for the reply anyway mate. It's appreciated.

You would not believe how paramount quality monitors in a quality room is. You simply can't make anything sound good if you can't hear it right.
