I got tired of searching and looking and contemplating.. so i just stepped in it and picked up a Blackface ADAT for $250.
Super low hours 1950...:( :D supposedly it had been serviced less than a year ago, and hadn't been used much since. Came from a "talent" agency that closed down. So probably more like amature porn.. he he.

/me crosses his fingers

no manual, so I will be axing lot'sa questions when it gets here. :D

best o' luck to ya! I guess if it craps out on you, being out $250 isn't the end of the world.
Maybe you can download the manual from the Alesis website? I'm assuming there still is one.

There is a manual at :http://www.alesis.com/downloads/manuals/ADAT_Manual.pdf.

Enjoy your ADAT, I bought a blackface one by $250 too, pretty good, serviced, new heads and stuff. Its working pretty well, I did a small demotape of my band. Of course I am not a skilled engineer, it was my very first recording outside professional studios and without anyone to help in the board.

Good luck and enjoy

just a thought, i remember those things costing about $5000. hah hah hah. gotta love digital.

my favorite part about adats is the plastic idler wheel that breaks down about every six months. thank god i know how to replace them and don't have to pay an adat-maintenence-nazi a $100 an hour to replace a $10 part. the ic chips are always fun too. hit "set-locate stop" to display your hours. christ i just tried one of mine: 4678, it should blow any week now. usually one goes down every six months like clockwork. i got three. wish people would quit bringing me adat tapes so i could sell them.

I've got 4 XT20s -- and they don't break down even a quarter of what you seem to think......

I do regular maintenance on them (myself), and the Idlers can be cleaned too...

well bully for your blue balls. you win a free fun filled night full of chancres and boners. if you are so confident with the high manufancturing standards of Aleisis i'll trade you my adats for yours. i guess if you spread six months over the three adats i have that is an average of one breaking every 1 1/2 years. i have one unit that is particularly finicky and it breaks down every year around christmas, with the current holidays being no exceptions. my da88's failure rate is not even close to the adats. although i've had a few go down. my worst culprit is the ampex 1/2" two track. peice of junk. shure sounds nice so i put up with it. what's the story on the newer hard disk stand alones? i've heard they are pretty solid from people that own them. time will tell. the nubster never buys first generation anything, he lets the suckers be the beta testers. thinking of eventually getting one for remote recording, could replace my laptop. laptops make me nervous. oh forget it, i forgot they get 1/2 the track count at 96 khz. maybe a Radar . . . .

Thanks guys. I think....

Should actually get it next week. Both the seller and I were too busy to complete the transaction in a timely manner.. lol

I do have a question though.

Can I put a peanut butter sandwich in the ADAT to get more of an analog sound? you know that analog sound that makes the tracks stick together so well????

:p

welcome to the ADAT crowd

When you get your ADAT, one of the best things you can do is either learn to clean the heads yourself, or be like me and make friends with someone who does, because the music stores will charge you way too much to service it.
