It can't be the one I had, but

I've got one that I bought used in 1968. It's the same cut as a LP Jr, but half as thick. I refinished it, put dual humbuckers on it, and changed the bridge out for a tune-o-matic. I wish I'd left it stock.

I still have it. It's a bit neck heavy, but it plays great.

you bastard!

OK, the bridge thing I understand. I actually did that too.

Hey, so you still have the stock pickup laying around?

Hey, I just looked at the Musician's Friend web site, and they are selling a two-pickup model for $399 that's not shown on Gibson's web site.

I think I know what I'm going to ask for for my birthday in June. :)

Huh???????

Damn!

I've got another couple of guitars in the works to get from a guy.

This is a conundrum.

At least the Melody Maker is a cheap part of the conundrum.

Well, I'm glad you think so.

My wife, on the other hand, is less likely to see it that way.

Yesterday

I was trying to get stuff out of the basement to have some work done on it, and my wife comes home right as I have most of my guitars in the garage, getting ready to load them up and take them to the storage facility.

She didn't say anything, but when she walked by, she gave me that 'my, you sure do have a lot of guitars' look.

Whatever happened to that "Do you hide gear from your wife" thread? I think there were some good tips there.

I'm going to print out the MF page with that dual-pickup Melody Maker on it, write, "Zaphod's birthday present - buy it now and hide it" on there, and tape it to my wife's side of the bathroom mirror.

I don't have two other guitar deals going. :p

Well, she doesn't know about those either.

What I need to do is find some turquoise guitars. She likes anything if it's turquoise. Or has a picture of Johnny Depp on it.

Actually, she did say I should get one of the ones at Rondo that's got the British flag on it, which is cool, but it's pretty far down the list of what I want. And if I got one with the Brit flag on it I'd want it to be a hollow body 12 string.

A Ric 360/12. Now there's a birthday present!

You know, the funny thing is,

I would go for one of those BFG LPs if it weren't for the godawful finish. I mean, I like raw and I like beat-up, but that striped flamey look just doesn't work for me. The black one literally looks like it's been through a fire.

I wonder how much Light would charge to paint the front...

I'm with you on that BFG LP. It's a great idea, ruined by an ugly paint job.

You know

if they had just made it a plaintop, no flame (actually, it looks like quilt to me), and not done the garish stain job on it, just left it natural, like the 'Raw' LP, it would've been great.

Right. I don't know what possessed them to "Pimp My LP." :D

Well, as my wife will attest, I never throw anything away, but where it is... Since it was 35 years ago when I did the mods, finding it may be problematic.

I hear you, man. I took my dime-store first electric apart to refinish it about that long ago, and I still have the parts in various places.

At 16, I didn't know that polyurethane would be that hard to get off. Now I'm almost thinking that I threw the body away! Still got the neck, electronics, and all the hardware though. But like you, I have no idea where.

If you run across it, and want to sell, let me know.

That's a long shot, but OK. On the neck dive issue, I may have come up with a solution. I was in my local dive shop the other day, gearing up for my annual trek to Cozumel (that's another story), and I hit on the idea of running the tail end of my strap through a belt mounted lead diving weight to counterbalance the annoying neck-heavy design of the Melody Maker. I bought a 1 lb and a 2 lb weight to try it. I'll let ya know how it works out.

Cool idea!

Unfortunately about 30 years too late for me, but....

I wonder if the single cuts have as pronounced a problem in that area, since there's a little more wood on the body. Of, course, it's at the neck end of the body, so it might actually be worse.

Hey, put up a pic.

I'd like to see how close it was to mine.

Was yours a dual pickup to begin with?

Mine was just a single. I think. Hell, now I don't know. It was over 30 years ago! You'd think I, of all people, would have a picture of it. If I do, I don't know where it is.

It was a single pickup (black plastic cover, single coil, rounded on the ends and flat on top), and transparent cherry red.
