I have a Pod and a J-station. I ended up getting the J-station because I couldn't get a good bass sound out of the Pod which I like for me guitar. The J has three bass models in it including Ampeg B-15 and SVT. It also has some pretty good guitar models that rival some of the POD sounds. Musician's Friend has them for $149. I reccomend it.

I listened to some of the tracks. Find the bass sitting in there nicely. It would have been very easy to make it heavier in the mix if that had been wanted, but that would have gone to the cost of other things, like kick.
Reminds me a bit of Ultraspank.

Another thing I see time and time again, all those pedals, pods etc. UNLESS they are especially designed for bass use (and sometimes even those who are) they have a strong midrange bias.
Unless you use all grade A circuitry, you will end up loosing frequency range - especially your lows and hight will be lost. More pedals and your loss increases sharply.

The answer?
1. Use studio quality effects instead of pedals, you can just use a pedalboard as a controller only.
2. Use a high quality preamp with an instrument input, or a very high quality dorect box. My preference currently is to use a little Grace 101.

Dole -- The Audio Buddy looks like a good deal (and got some good reviews at zzounds). But here's another potentially silly question for you -- if I'm looking for a preamp to pump up the signal for bass/keys, is there a reason why I couldn't just use my dbx vocal preamp (286A)? Has compression built in, etc... Just looking to save some cash where I can...

Lt. Bob -- I tried the J Station for guitar a while back and was unimpressed, but I never tried it for bass, so I may need to take another listen.

Sjoko2 -- glad the mixes sound okay to you. I'm not terribly dissatisfied -- I just think the bass is not as rich and warm as it could be... Right now, I just run the bass through the POD -- no pedals, etc. but it's true that the POD may be stealing my low frequencies... Do you have any thoughts on possibly using my mic preamp for bass/keys?

If I can get by with what I already have, that's more money for new fun stuff. ;) Let me know your thoughts when you get the chance...

Had to look it up myself before the last post...

MIC INPUT
Floating balanced, Pin 2 Hot
Impedance: 1.75k
Maximum Level: 0.2Vrms
Gain Adjustment Range: +10dB to +60dB
Phantom Power: +48VDC
CMRR: >40dB, typically 55dB

LINE INPUT
Floating balanced, TIP Hot
Impedance: 30k unbalanced, 60k balanced
Maximum Level: >+21dBu, balanced or unbalanced
Gain Adjustment Range: -20dB to +30 dB

Nope - you'll need to get your level up to line level to be fully effective there. Get a good quality direct box
