bear with me while i try to explain this! i know lots of sequencers have actual tempo tracks that can be programmed, but that isnt exactly what im looking to do.

i want something a lot more natural -

Say i record a bass track to lay down the rhythm for the song and i record it without a metronome or anything. is there any software that will allow me to play back that bass track and tap out that tempo? but not simply get the average BPM, i want to create an entirely new tempo track following the bass exactly. this way i can program drums and other instruments following the grid that i created.

from what ive seen most tempo tracks allow you to manually program changes, which is fine, but what if you want to create a tempo track/grid to follow a prerecorded track?

does this make any sense?
thanks!

With a MIDI keyboard you could just record a MIDI track tapping to the tempo...

Reaper has a built in "Virtual MIDI Keyboard" so you don't even actually need a MIDI keyboard to do it, you can use your computer keyboard.

Then if you want, run that MIDI tempo track through a cheap/free drum machine plug-in.

Dont you think recording the drums first would be like a custom click track? or any type of perc. instrument.
