eliminating fretscrape

Here's a thought, learn to play without the squeaks. Nothing goes on my strings except my fingers, sweat and the occassional spilled beer and a little drool.

Read up in the post ya dork. I mentioned Finger ease.

Well... to be fair, Fangar, you did call it Fanger Ease...:D

But I take your point about the goofy applicator... What's Fast Fret anyway? It sounds a lot cleaner than Gorilla Snot... I like the idea of teflon spray too... what about a pair of rubber gloves to boot??? Learning toplay without the squeaks - well that sounds like a lot less fun... :D

You guys are just to much, I love coming to this site. I laugh and laugh till I can't stand it no more. Anyway, I would say it depends on what your doing. Are you just doin' one song for a recording? Use finger ease. Do you play the acoustic all the time? Probably need better technique. I would say if your using finger ease that you would want to change your stings more often and clean the neck good when you do.

Gorilla Snot is a tacky substance that drummers put on sticks for traction and guitar players on their picks so they won't drop 'em. Finger ease is the revolting slime I've seen guitar & bass players spray on their strings to eliminate squeeks. I picked up a guy's guitar once that used that shit and it was like putting your hand in a lung cookie. Very nasty.

Gorilla snot is the stuff produced by the mucus membranes in monkeys. It is scrapped off the tree limbs. Best and more abundant when said monkey has a cold.

No serious, I agree with Trix. With a new set of strings and coat of Fanga.... Finger ease, the sound should be good.

Fast fret is the bomb. That's what is it. Finger ease is the generic version of fast fret. and no, it does not have a goofy applicator...perhaps you were referring to yo mama's tampons. j/k.

I don't ever notice finger squeek, but NOW I probably will thanks to you losers :p . Anyway the premis behind finger (Fangar) ease is this. It is said that when you change a set of strings that if applied, finger ease fills in the spaces between the strings with a light coating that helps to keep the dead skin from your Fangars from building up in there. If you apply it, you need to wipe off the excess so that it is not all snotty like the RAT said. It is also siad that when you put it on old strings that it coats the fangar sluff in the strings. Bad I guess. Anyways, Gorilla Snot is for picks and Sticks, which are often dropped due to bad technique. Anywho...

Eyeslikefire said it. Fast fret has not been around half as long as Finger Ease. And yes it does have a goofy applicator. Click Here . Other than that though it is almost the same thing. No actually I was referring to your chrome butt plug applicator. You know the one the guitar store sold you on the basis it would help your guitar playing. Yeah that one.

Cheers,

what's the best way to eliminate 'fretscrape' when recording acoustic guitar? I have tried every mic position under the sun but it's still picking it up. I'm using a Rode NT3 and/or AKG cs1000.

Thanks - Malg.

Clean it up when you're mixing.
Dip the volume fader down during the sqeaks and scrapes.

Or open up the audio clips in an audio editor and edit the volumes of the squeeks there.

I've had good luck with Elixer (sp?) strings - that coating (or whatever it is) seems to minimize the 'creaking', and actually had a secondary effect of warming up the recorded sound of my guitar (Taylor 410 - pretty bright sounding)...

Anyway, I hope this helps! -

By the way - these strings seem to have a little longer life than the D'addarios I was using..

Jim

Exactly right, Jim, I use nothing but Elixir's on my acoustic. I play a Jasmine A/E cutaway (which is a cheap sub-line of Takamine), and not only is string-squeak no problem at all, it feels much better to play in general, and those strings sound like a mutha! Really, my Jasmine (recorded with a SM57) sounds like a Martin... with D'Addario strings it sounds buzzy and muddy. I've tried flatwounds too, and although they definitely eliminate string-squeak, they're nowhere near as comfortable as Elixir rounds, and they'll slow you down. IMHO :D

I have a radical solution to your problem.

1. Rip frets from fingerboard
2. Practice flatwounding your fingers
3. Using gorilla fangs, dig snot out of your nose
4. Apply to your hand with warm water
5. Soak yourself with plenty of elixir
6. Shut off mike or bring upi the gain so high that
the feedback is more annoying, thus lessing your
fretscrape!

I hope this was as helpful to you as it wasnt to me

This concludes our broadcast day

What do you guys think of using a light application of the Hemp Oil from The Body Shop on your fingers? I read that one among some bass player tips once.

Hmmm. See, I really dont think it bothers me too much about fretscrape. If it is something that does bother you in your playing I guess the only thing I can say is; 1. Practice..?!?. 2. Shop around for some other strings like ELIXIR like C7sus said. I do like them and i was recently turn on to them within the last 6 months. I personally LOVE flatwound strings.

Hemp oil....? Hmm. I dont know
