Tom, Another absolutely great job. Your vocals have certainly come to maturity with one of the most captivating and recognisable styles on the site!:) brings to mind a touch Like that group from years ago, jethro tull but your MUCH better!!

I also appreciate the great playing and superior percussion development your music has,,Such tone only great players achieve. Only those with pure musical genius can compose as you do.

Theres something of a very Nautical influenced feeling about much of your music, are you active in that area as well?

This is ready to press to my ears:D :D

BTW wheres that collab song you did vocals on a while back, I need to download that one again.

Peace and prosperity
Bill

1. What effects do you use on vocals? THey sound really clear without too much reverb?

Just Reverb usually. Large room, decent sized tail (1.4s i think), mixed lightly with a 50ms pre-delay. i also will often cut a tiny piece from the low mids (350 to 500Hz) to sit better with the bass and guitars that work in that range as well. On occasion when i deem appropriate i'll add some chorus to the vox, but delicately and deliberately. For example the vocals in the back of the guitar solo in this song have some chorus on them to put them in a certain place. But i try not to use effects on the voice too much like i used to. They eat up a lot of your natural depth.

2. How have you panned your guitars? I'm finding it hard to localize where its coming from..which is good! Kinda seems centered but a bit to the left..sounds sweet as.

This tune has 4 guitar parts all playing unison at any given moment.
The acoustics on this are panned approx 50% left and right. (The second acoustic comes in with the drums and they both play continuously to the end of the song. The Electric clean guitars are panned 89%L and 89%R. The heavy guitar chorus guitars are panned 84%L and 89% R. I would have brought the heavy gits closer to center, but it was too much of a stereo leap from the cleans, too sudden, when it changes.

Maybe that will be useful information for ya...hope so. Thanks a lot man. :)

Sam- Thanks for the push. How's that thing coming? No rush. Just wondering...

wfaraoni- Dude those were some very kind words. Thanks a lot. Tull was a great band IMO. They still tour actually, but i've never seen them.

BTW wheres that collab song you did vocals on a while back, I need to download that one again.

If you mean "Why Are You Still Here" with Jeff Marcomb it's at his site.

If you mean "Work A Little Harder" with Mark Buster it's at his site.

i should listen to those again...it's been a long time. Thanks man.

Very cool, I was expecting "quality" and wasn't disappointed.

I was a little surprised at the lead tone? Not a like or dislike thing, but I had painted a different color in my head while listening and reading the posts. I knew there was a PRS Marshall combination coming up but it wasn’t what I thought.

Very nice work, I'm a big fan now! I know you play guits and did the vocals; do you also do the rest?

Ahhh interesting thought! Ya, i added quite a bit of stereo chorus to the lead to distinguish it from the other guitar frequencies. Almost doesn't sound like a PRS anymore, does it.

Usually. This one i did. i have a couple songs where Guernica did the bass and Lt. Bob did the horns because they're both excellent players and i trust them greatly.

Thanks a lot!

Sounds good to me man. I don't really have a problem with the intonation issues 'cause that atonal thing seems like part of your style...........time out.................hey, nice guitar ride!...........another nice piece of work bro.

I have developed a taste for your music which means I can't hear the mix as objectively because I'm actually listening for and expecting "your sound" but I can say that for me this is one of your best tunes. It seems more totally conected and unified than some of your other stuff. I like them all but this one had a cohesive groove all the way thru that really had me caught up in it.

BTW.....my schedule has finally slowed so I should have something for you soon.

GOOD WORK!
apologies to Chris the King of big letters........

"Are you going to Scarborough Fair?"

Oh, hang on, it's not that one after all. No, this isn't a song of tender longing. This one hurts in another way.

I heard this one when you posted it before. I liked it then. I like it now. It's more elaborate now, and I like the changes you've made.

You know, I've learned something from this one. I dumped Winamp from my system yesterday, and nominated Cool Edit as my mp3 player. Which means I see the waveform as well as hear the song. The waveform for Dry is a bit of a revelation to me. When I do a mix, I take the peaks of my mixdown up to clipping but not beyond - that's one reason I compress tracks, so I can get the overall track level higher without clipping. But you haven't done that - the waveform goes way over the line and the meter is clipping again and again, but I don't hear any distortion. Huh?

So, first question: how'd you do that?

Second question: what's your bass and bass chain? I really really like the sound you're getting on it.

Really good song. This one goes on the album, okay? :) A spacious atmospheric well-done song with structure and moments of real excitement. Your songs are journeys.

great acoustic guitars......nice production here sluice....i like the song, kind of takes you to a different world..........what do you use from drums on this?

Man I wish I knew how to record like that! Your stuff always floors me. Very powerful tune...great acoustic tone. I love the textures. I can't say enough good about it. Beautiful job!

The thread is back from the dead i see...

Lt. Bob- thanks my man. And good to hear you're still interested in that other thing! It will be interesting to hear the metamorphosis. Cheers Steve!
:)

dobro- i'll be sending you a PM about your cd. Got it yesterday...excellent stuff. Well worth more than the little money i paid.

So, first question: how'd you do that?

First off, this tune is completely unmastered, no compression, no nothing. I almost never do any mastering to my stuff, mostly because I really don't feel confident enough to do it myself. I try to settle all that stuff in the mixing process. I've been debating with myself for a while whether or not I should get a ME for any "release" I do. I'd be interested in hearing what this stuff would sound like mastered.

But this doesn't actually answer your question. I'm not sure exactly how to answer that, or if I even know the answer... let's explore it a little....

I mix with Sonar. I submix out through four separate mains. I make absopositively certain that none of these 4 Mains clips at all (some times this seems just unavoidable, so I make sure it isn't clipping by 10 dB's or something). Then I export these 4 mains as a single stereo wave file. I then listen to the wave all mixed down, this allows me most importantly to hear it without the defects of heavy cpu usage caused by soft-effects like reverb and chorus.
That's pretty much it. I don't like messing with the peaks for the full mix...I don't feel I yet have the ears for that.

Second question: what's your bass and bass chain?

Korg Triton>sound card :)

It's fake bass mixed very meticulously...I haven't yet found the budget for a real bass. Actually my younger brother just bought a cheap Epiphone bass that I'll be trying when I have a long enough time frame to record. I'm almost thinking of selling the Triton to get a bass, but I like it for that occasional pad that just completely changes the backdrop.

You probably weren't expecting those answers, sorry they probably won't be of much use. But I'm fond of questions, so thanks.

powderfinger- Thanks man...glad you liked this one. I think I wrote the music mostly to sort of hypnotize myself or something...it was quite a while ago. But it took me to places to, so I thought I'd record it and was pretty heppy I did. The drums are drum kit from hell. I've been using them since December I think. I'm constantly finding new ways to mix them too....EQ etc. Thanks again!

Sydfan- haha...cheers man. Very cool things to say...appreciated!

Great tune, complex, nice lyrics and instrumentation. I didn't notice any glaring intonation problems, you have a unique voice.

Sluice

"Dry"Sounds really good, I understand than some compares your song to Metallica, it's the acou. guitarsound+bass-drum at the start of the song.

Really like the rythmguitarpart of of run for your life as well.

Best song: "The road to baxter park", I think. The vocals harmonize with the acoustic guitar, the guitar solo is to long, though.

Keep it coming

Hey this is really good. I have no complaints except the one that Pedullist offered up. I think you can sing really well but there are a couple of things where you go off , maybe not outta key...but it sounds outta place. This reminds me of Alice In Chains meets Live or something similar.

Yeah, but thats SLUICE. This stuff is good.

Sounds great as always Tom!

I really dig the acoustic work, sweet.
Just the lead parts seemed a little thin, but I think that's just in comparison to the doubled acoustic.
Really tough to get lead on an an acoustic to sound big,no?
Did you use the VTB1 on them, sounds good.

What stuck out most to me was the way you sang.
Most of your songs you use the same style, which is great, except for The Road to Baxter Park, where you sounded totally different.

On this one it seemed like you morphed the two styles together and really brought a new dimension to your singing.

A really fine tune,
Pete

Listening to the old version and this back to back.....This version SMOKE'S the old one!!!!!!!! no shit! listening on comp monitor's too, but they are good one's, and i know when the bass is to heavy(they rattle easily!)....and this sound's great! the big thing for me though, was the vocal's!!! There's so much more clarity on this version! that's what really got my attention. You never cease to amaze!!!!

Thank's , sluice!

Peace

Rick

DISCLAIMER: At work with headphones

Wow. I just started listening to this and I'm very impressed with the acoustic.

I'm pretty sure I've asked you this before; as I recall, you program your drums ... dont you? Nice.

I love how the electric and acoustic track each other during the fill at 3:00. Sounds very cool !!!

I think this is one of my favorites of yours.

Overall - no complaints. Great as usual.

I've got a couple of my own compilation CD's of stuff off this BBS that I really enjoy. I was reviewing your collection at Nowhere and I think it's time I create a SLuiCe-ONLY CD. What's your plan with your music? Have you been submitting to any publishers, etc ....?

In the words of Billy Joel ... Man, what are you doin' here?"

Nice Moody Piece of Music!

Hey Sluice, long time no see ...

Very nice opening on this one. I love the acoustic guitar and the drum flourishes.

Vocals are top notch.

I wish I could give you some good feedback on what you are really looking for, but my set up sucks so all the levels come out wrong anyway on my end.

But the song totally rocks and the playing is great!

:)

GREAT SONG!

GREAT MIX !

GREAT SOUND !

NICE VOX !

BUT,

Like some others pointed out, you seem to have everything near perfect except a few places where the vocals need some polishing.

GREAT JOB THOUGH.

Hey....a promise is a promise...so hear I am...finally.

Holy crap!!!

That is absolutely excellent. Most definitely a keeper. When you get your album done, sign me up for a copy. I really am digging your music. The music & sound are just friggin incredible and unique (in my mind any way).

If I had just one nit about this performance is that the vocal gets a little loose in a few spots. Not terribly, but if I had you in a studio producing you (not that I have ever done that ;)) I'd have you try a couple parts again. Again this is just minor stuff but would take this from a fecking unbelievable performance to a "perfect" one IMVHO. Excellent piece of work man!!!

(note...I didn't read through the rest of the thread, so I don't know if I'm being helpful, repetetive or what...so...)

Again...excellent work...into the keepers folder this one goes too.
