I didn't read all 76 pages of this thread, going back to 2002. But, I just want to point out:

If you are a student (or know a student who can buy it for you), the student version of Pro Tools 9 is exactly the same as the regular version, and can be had on eBay for $285, vs. $599 for regular.

This is how I usually buy Pro Tools.

Pirating is so 2000's. Don't be a cheesy cheap basturd. Buy it. People respect you.
If you don't have integrity then fuck off
I saw this music students page where he was selling beats with royalty entitlement (depending on usage and other terms). I scrolled down the page where he listed his rig and he said he had a "cracked" version of some DAW.
BASTURD

Nowadays, it not expensive. Tried the trial versions of N-Track, Audacity, Reaper and Mixcraft 5.

IMHO Mixcraft 5 by Acoustica matches up with the best of them........for about $75.

I use a handful of the several thousand free VST plug-ins out there and I got Cubase LE 4 with my mixer. Most interfaces come with a DAW so that makes it easy.

Everything I use is bought (and downloaded mostly, most companies don't do box versions with the exception of large sample libraries and daws).

Hello Diggy, think I was the one that advised Mixcraft to BassMan, but I don't have an answer to your question :( . However I have asked there support team, wonder how helpful they're gonna be?... Will keep you posted.

From Mixcraft - Steve, that product has been discontinued by Tascam. However, I assume that your talking about controller surfaces...ie: Allowing your hardware mixer knobs and sliders to control Mixcraft or vice versa. We plan on control surfaces for version 6. This is a advanced feature that you may not want or need.

I know it's been discontinued. That's why I'm wondering if Mixcraft supports it.

I don't understand the last part. Is he saying it doesn't support any control surfaces yet?

Now who can argue with that? :D

I have tried... to no avail... :D

Way I look at this... Okay, yes, software piracy is 'slightly less than honest' but it is rather easy to think of it as 'not stealing'. Many people who accept pirated software might not even dream of stealing so much as an apple (the edible kind) from the supermarket. However, i suspect it increases sales through awareness of the product. I know of people who started out with pirated software whilst learning and eventually, when they started making money out of their work, they were able to buy the full package and take full advantage of the perks of having a registered product. The truth is, that if the pirated version had not been available in the first place, there are those who would not have got into home recording at all.

There is some speculation that software piracy is encouraged by the manufacturers themselves. This might be an exaggeration; with the companies turning at least a blind eye to it. Otherwise, I think they might have made the software harder to crack. When cloud technology reaches it's potential, then perhaps we'll be able to see whether this is true or not, won't we? Personally, I dread it.

Look at it this way. There are people with talent out there, but no money. They could end up working in the industry as a result of having had the opportunity to learn the applications... thus giving something back to the industry in time.

This strikes me as a decidedly left wing, socialist sort of paradigm. In Capitalism, there are always the levellers and, like it or not, that is an inescapable fact of Capitalism. Levellers have existed in society since the earliest times of the Fuedal system. Capitalism needs a certain amount of crime, in order to function correctly. Though most people like to sweep those sorts of facts under the carpet, in order to justify their way of life. Honesty is a product of ego. Most people think on a grossly simplified level, exhibiting a kneejerk reaction to software piracy.

I buy the software that I use. Not only is it the ethical thing to do, but it runs better and I get support when it doesn't. Most cracks are loaded with backdoors, rootkits, and/or viruses. Not worth it on my DAW.

Couldn't have said it better Doctor Varney. I got into home recording using pirated software, because there just was no way I could pay for it - I was 14! Now, the software isn't a whole lot of use without a bit of hardware, so my first earnings went toward that. I wasn't making any PROFIT from the software, so how could I justify purchasing it?

Now, a few years on, I own ALL the software I use, partially as a result of getting a job IN the industry, using the software I had pirated. Without access to it beforehand, I never would have had the skills necessary to get in. I had drive, and passion, and now I can contribute to the industry. I'll (probably) be a lifetime customer of the companies in question, so I don't think they've been hurt in any way. From a net profits perspective, they've gained a lot. I'll also recommend their software to people, and encourage them to buy it when they're ready. I think this is a very healthy process in a digital age.

Feel free to disagree :) I'd love to hear thoughts!
