Reel deep thoughts...
Sheesh, Herm...anybody can screw up a deck...any deck can get screwed up...take it from me, and I've been involved in this for a pretty short time. The 48 and 58 have as much, if not more logic circuitry.
The record/repro head on the 388 is of an advanced technology over the heads on the 38/48/58...not that the 1/2" doesn't have sonic potentials out of the 1/4" format's grasp, but its hard to argue with the economy of 1800' of 1/4" tape over 2500' 1/2" reels...
By virtue of the unique features of the 388, the fact that it sounds great, and the economy of the all-in-one unit that uses 1/4" tape I think there needs to be a level playing field.
Your experience with them is crutially valuable.
I also think that, because they are less understood and a more narrow format/basic mixer than a component 1/2" system that they fall into the hands of folks that don't respect them or use them properly. That is a generalization, yes, but I truly think there might be some merit to it.
Also, more often than not, people are going to come here when there's a problem, not just because.
I hear ya, Gary...but I in my oblivious state (with a fully-functional strong-running 388) remain unshaken...I realize you weren't trying to shake anybody.
