Hey Everyone,
Brand spankin new to Tascam. I've been using Yamaha 01V96 and 03Ds both for a whilke now, and have recently purchased a DM3200... mainly because of the extensive routing options everyone says it has. The 01V96 has some great options, but the DM3200 has even more, which is what I was looking for.

So here's I am, nice new board, but no desk! I'm planning on building one (frankly I just don't have the extra cash for an Argosy). I'd like to build one similar to one I found here http://picasaweb.google.com/billshafer1/TascamDM3200CustomConsole#5322051611068467410

My question is: Does anyone have the mesurement from the bottom of the board (not to the desk top that the board is sitting on, with space left for the feet), I mean Right from the bottom of the board itself, to the Top of the Optional Meter bridge? I don't have the meter bridge yet, but am planning on getting it, and I want to leave space on the desk for it.

Also if any of you have build desks of your own, I'd love to hear about, or better yet see the designs, if you're willing to post some pics and dimensions...

I imagine the desk will be close to 4 feet deep and about 5ft wide, with space for racks on either side.

Thanks for any help you can offer, much appreciated!
Cheers

Hi Jay,
To answer your question, it's about 14". I am not near my board right now so I can't measure it.
I have another option though, I bought my custom made desk from Dash Studio Furniture: www.dashstudiofurniture.com
That's mine in the deluxe section, top left with the letter. Once they make the desk, they take it apart and ship it, with the hardware, in flat boxes via cargo delivery. I've really liked mine, especially the casters that it rolls on, so that I can get into the back to change wiring. It's a lot cheaper then argosy, and is custom made. Just a thought.

Thanks for the update. I have actually looked at that website before. That's a pretty sweet desk you have! I still think I'm gonna give building one a try anyway. So you say 14" hey?... if and when you have a sec to confirm that, it would be greatly appreciated! I just don't want to start, and be out by an inch and it not work out in the end...

Thanks again for your help, and again if anyone else has desk pics they'd be willing to post pics of, or share plans for, I'd love to see them!
Cheers

Probably not what you're looking for idea wise, but I built an all-steel, open frame console desk for my various mixing consoles. The first picture is with just a few pieces of gear, the second picture shows things mostly loaded.

The picture you linked to is actually not that difficult to make out of pine, hardwoods, or even MDF. For strength you use a quality woodworker's glue and dowel the pieces together. I can shove a few pictures on this thread on how I made my workshop cabinets as the technique is pretty much the same, except instead of making rectangular boxes you'll be making something more sculpted to fit your gear. You can easily frame around purchased rack rails to house patch pays and/or rackmount outboards, pre-amps, synth modules, and so on.

However you build it, make sure any equipment that has fans or ventilation holes have access to fresh air. Heat is the enemy of electronics, so you want to pay attention to this. Holes can be bored as necessary, assuming you're not boring them in structural pieces. This was partly why I went with my idea of an open-frame steel console table - it's completely open, allowing for ventilation and wiring in any direction that was necessary.

Plus, I enjoy welding and this console table was also another opportunity to play in the driveway.

Wow, I'd love to have welding skills... That'd be great to be able to build something like that! Nice work, thanks for posting the pics. Yeah, if you wouldn't mind posting some of the cobinet pics you were talking about, that'd be a huge help as well.

I will of course make sure there is venting for all the gear... in fact, the plan is to build 2 racks below the desk (one on each side, to hold my rack computers, and extra gear that dosn't need to be up top) with open tops, so that I can flat mount gear in the top of the desk (kind of like the argosy desks http://www.argosyconsole.com/argosy_tascamdm3200.html ) Which means there will be big holes cut in the base of the desk to allow for it, plus I plan on cutting vents into the base of the desk just below where the DM3200 will sit, so the vents on the underside of the board can breath a bit.

Big plans, require a lot of help, so thanks for any insight you can give!
Cheers
