Demagnetize the 3340s?

I've never had any experience, and I'm wondering is it necessary to demag the heads before I record? And If it is could somebody point me to the right demagnetizer to use. Thanks!
 
HAve a look out for a secondhand TEAC E-3, they came out about the same time as the 3340, I got one in a TEAC maintenance kit with cleaning liquid, splicing tape, small screwdrivers etc, that came with my 3340 when I bought it.

Gonna go with a E-1 demagnetizer. Are the instructions to use very simple?
I'm just afraid I might screw up my machines...
 
Have a read of this thread also. There's some interesting background information as well as instructions on how to use a degausser. It's not a long thread either. Only 6 posts.
 
Alright I just got the E-1 Demag in the mail today. So you have to demagnetize each head on the recorder correct? How close do I get to the heads? 3 inches?
And Do Ihave to slowly move in from lets say a foot away? Also Do I point it at the center of the head? The instructions dont say much. Although I might be making this whole thing too complicated...haha
 
Also I have my teac 3340s laying on its back. So this is what i might do I just need to know if its correct.

Turn off power to the recording deck. Turn on demag 3+ feet away. Slowly move in start with the left side of the deck, (3 inches away from touching) moving the demag vertically on the tape arm, and the tape guide, then I start with the first head which i stay moving the wand vertically slowly for about 4 times, then move on to the next head , repeat and do the same to the next head. Then I move towards the right side and do the pinch roller and tape arm etc. For the pinch rollers and tape path can I do it just 2 times up and down.
And then once im done I move 3 feet away and turn off the demag.
 
Or...do I demag the first head, move back slowly 2-3 feet, then turn off the power. Turn it back on and start at the next head? and do I do this for each thing i demagnetize?
 
i've been demagging my decks for over 30 years with no problems at all.

you got it pretty much right in post #7. i power on the demagger at ~4' away, then bring the (tape/plastic wrapped) tip to within a 1/8" of the any head and do the rest of the heads and metal guides/parts all in 'one fell swoop', ie do them one right after the other then back off the prerequisite ~4 feet and turn demag power off.

I see. So I would do the tape guides then move to the next head, then the next head, and the last head, right tape guides, then move 4 feet back and turn off?

i've been demagging my decks that way for over 30 years with no problems at all
 
Clean the heads first! Make sure the deck is OFF! Keep the demag away from tape and computers. Plug it in as far away as you can and bring it in slowly. Get as close to the heads and guides as you can with out touching anything. Finaly, move the demag away slowly as far as you can, then unplug. I don't think I missed anything.
 
Another thing I do, though I'm not sure if it really matters is that I'll back off like 6" in between each component (headstack, guide, etc.).

I've also gotten in the habit when at each headstack of sweeping back and forth over EACH HEAD 3~4 times. I had an issue where my Tascam 58 wasn't getting thoroughly degaussed and this did the trick.
 
Alright I just finished demagnetizing and I dont really know if it worked or not. I did both of my machines the right way. I listened to a tape and it played back really nice, good quality. So Im not really sure but oh well.... I did it!

good point. i do the same but forgot to mention it in my post.
