My only advice would be to be very carefull with the drums programming since Death Metal is mostly about good drumming. Personnaly I bought the BFD plugin in Sonar 4, combined with my drummer with his triggers and we get the drum sound we were dreaming of. I didn't tryed DFH since I'm more than happy with BFD.

I am happy with my drum machine software and they give great support. I am working to get a good sound with it. I am jsut having problems programing. I can do blast beats and double bass stuff but when it come to fills and rolls I seem to program everything the same. I am not a drummer and not sure what beat sound good where and when. Any advice?

Yeah dude, please post the song again and start a new thread. Meybe we can get a killer thread going for people just recording death metal. I am sure there are a few others that would find it helpful and some willing to help us. Let me know when you post your song.

The problem is, the song is 35 minutes long as we speak  , I'm aiming at 45-50 minutes song... Maybe I could chop it up in some segments and post some.

I'll check this out next week.

Edit : Also it's in surround 5.1, I would need to prepare a downmix...

To be real honnest I'm not very good at beat programming, I thank Satan for providing me a real drummer with some imagination :D . When I look at the midi track after he played, I'm totally clueless how he did this. I seriously doubt that someone could program something like this out of the blue.

Maybe you could get a little USB keyboard controler with some rubber pads on it, you could punch your rolls on it, and then start with that. That's what I would do if I didn't had a drummer.

How did you EQ the drums to the song you did? Did you use compression and or reverb? I would like to work with the drum machine software I have to get as close to your drum sound as I can get. Yes, I want to steal your drum sound.

Well, I EQ'd them quite a bit but that doesn't mean your drums will need the same tweaks. But for metal these guidelines are somewhat typical:

Kick - a little boost around 80 Hz, a pretty big cut around 300 Hz, and a boost around 4 - 5 kHz for the click.
Snare - Usually a high pass around 100 Hz or so, the low mid could be anywhere depending on the sound of your snare. You might just leave it alone. Possibly a boost around 5 kHz for more crack.
Toms - Maybe a boost around 2.5 to 5 kHz for definition. Maybe a cut around 400-500 Hz to clean up the sound. If it doesn't sound good don't do it.
O'Heads - I generally cut everything below 500 Hz. maybe a high shelf somewhere above 5 or 6 kHz, it depends on where it sounds good.

Again it's all up to your ear. it depends on what your sounds are like to start with. But try it, if it sounds good do it, if not than start branching out from these tips a little until it works with your drums. Sometimes you need very little or no EQ so don't force the issue.
It doesn't hurt to high pass stuff that doesn't need the low end or vice versa. (that's sort of an EQ norm for me) Example - cutting everything below 100 Hz on the snare.
Compression depends entirely on how your drums sound. Some compression usually sounds good on a snare and toms just to get them sounding bigger. I usually compress my overheads just a little. On my kick I use a sample which is already the perfect sound for me so I don't touch it.

For reverb I use a bus with a reverb inserted set 100% wet. I set up a send to that bus on every drum track that I want effected. (basically everything but the kick) and adjust the send levels of each one until it sounds good to me. I don't do any reverb on individual tracks.

Bringing my momma into this huh, wiggle-dick?

Well, if you had a bigger penis maybe you could distract her from them long enough to get your share! :p

What else you got?

Actually, I have to admit, your dad was involved too :o While your mom was feasting on your butt chunky buffet, I was doing that thang from behind. I was pleasantly surprised when your pop was kind enough to start squeezing my walnuts between thrusts...

So, I hope realize, that I am in no rush for my turn at your peanutty poo-poo... :p

p.s. If I win this rank out, can I get some rep power back ?

The next time my dad is long stroking you up the ass I don't want to hear about it....I don't care if he is throwing in a complimentary ball-sack reach-around. Dear old dad...he always was one for the "caboose".
And you need to get over this whole scatological/legume hang-up because my shit is the bomb. One taste of my nutty goodness will convince you. Hang in there my man!

This thread is wavering dangerously off-topic......my appologies.

I record metal in my mom's basement (oh the cred). The aforementioned link has some of my work (the best, in my opinion, is 'Imperfect...', but check out whatever you'd like).

I use Beatcraft for my drums, and use all of the samples that came with it. I just use mad EQ, compression, and reverb from within Beatcraft on the individual parts of the kit to get mix-friendly results.

For the guitars I use my Randall RG75 solid-state combo (piece of junk), a Shure SM57, a Behringer UB1002 mixer, an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface, and Cool Edit Pro 2.0. Bass I DI into the Fast Track. Yes, my rig is abysmal, but I like to think the results are pretty good considering the crappiness of said rig.

sushi-mon; after that last post, I'd say you've already lost <_<

Shit man, the results are good without considering the rig! I listened to "Imperfect".....that sounds pretty damn good!

Hey, thanks! You wouldn't believe how hard I've had to try to get a response to any of my music on this site

Like I say, Imperfect is my best mix so far, as there's not really anything that's clearly WRONG with it. Most of my other songs I can hardly stand to listen to.

Alright, I must apologize. It seems that Metal for Brains and his relatives know a lot more about the sophistications of cooking up a fine sphincter souffle and the associated anal explorations that goes with the territory. Alass, I must admit, I am in over my head with all this wholesome family fun.

I will bow out now, but most certainly this has been no more than a draw...

Hey it's all good. I just like peanuts.
All that twisted sex stuff is just between you........and my parents. :p

Hey Metalhead, what are your views on compressing rhythm tracks? I hear a lot people going either way, and hearing good results on both sides. Your thoughts?

As long as they promise not to tell, I am down with it. BUTT, if I find a video called, "Sushi-Mon and the Rectal Round Up All-Stars" on the quadruple rated X shelf, then there WILL be hell to pay !!!

Holy Crap dude!!! The songs are killer. I am totally impressed. I liked them all. I wish the vocals on 'Imperfect...',... You got anymore death metal stuff? I would love to hear it.

You mentiond the M-Audio Fast Track USB interface; does this take the place of your sound card?

I also use beatcraft to program my drums and I like it. I am just trying to learn how to program a bit beter and get a killer death metal sound from the drums. I also use Mixcraft for the recording. The same company makes mixcraft and beatcraft.

I just ordered the Behringer Eurorack UB802 Mixer and should have it in a few days. I think it is one step below what you have. I might be asking you a few questions about it one I get it and hook everything up.

How long have you been recording your own stuff?
