DAT question

I just got a Casio DA-R100 portable DAT recorder. It's pretty great except for one problem. I also have a stereo microphone which I want to use. When I plug it (using the 5 pin - mini stereo adaptor) to the DAT's line/mic input, i am only able to get the right channel when mic is selected. I can get both L and R when using line in, but the mic selection (as well as the mic -20dB selection) only give me a right channel. The problem is that the line level is too low, and the mic level sounds so much better. Anyone want to help me troubleshoot this? It will save me having to buy a battery powered mic preamp!
