Damnit, MSR-16 is making noise in the circuit at idle

I've used mine without NR and its not bad as long as its at high speed. I tested it using a new tape, too. Once I was transfering a song to the msr-16 from Pro Tools and I didn't notice for quite a while that only half of the NR was enabled. I was slamming it to tape, though, so the levels were really high and already compressed in Pro Tools where needed.

You'll want to do things like compress to tape when you can. Using compression and make up gain on a recorded track will make the hiss MUCH more noticeble.

I'd personally look into having it fixed if I had the cash. Or wait until I have the cash and use it without the NR for a while. It bites, but I don't know that it means you can't use the machine. Give Christine a chance! :)

At any rate, that's something to talk to the tech about. Does s/he have any insight on the matter? Ever heard of such a thing?

My heart goes out to you. :(

And welcome aboard, Hilltop Studios. :)

Take care,
Chris

Sorry for the delay in response, but Wilma took her toll on us this past Monday. Furious is the only adjective that I feel accurately describes the awe I felt during this storm. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm on my work computer intermittently as we are in recovery mode, but my home probably will not have power for several weeks they are saying. :( :(

I'm using 15ips and don't really notice a lot of hiss. I wonder if the Dolby is engaged in the on position internally without registering the two indicator lights on the exterior. I'm driving the levels hard too. Weird. Nonetheless, fotunately I have a little money I can spend and I think that is good advice to not give up on her at this point. Just need to get on my feet again from the storm and then I'll take it back to my tech, about an hour trek from here.
Thanks again everyone for the advice and support. :)

If you're wondering whether or not the machine is recording/playing back with NR, even though the lights are off, try recording just silence. Recording and playing back silence, without any NR, will have a lot of hiss. Whereas, if there is no hiss at all with silence, then your NR is working. But there will be a significant difference (when playing and recording silence or quiet parts) between no NR and NR.

Hope that helps a little bit, hang in there bud!

Dolby is definitely fu**ed up. Now it is not so bad as far as hiss without the NR, but I do notice some hum. A little. I need to post a clip of what my kit sounds like. Need to finish hooking up the system to the processors and to the master deck, but the board when playing through it sounds beautiful. I am VERY happy with the Mackie 8 bus. May just be normal hum, recorded with all levels down, still get it a little. Definitely the NR is having problems, whatever the case. Taking it to the tech next Thursday on my day off.

ps.s--sounds GREAT otherwise, and maybe a little noise (been listening to the MP3 clinic computer recordings too long maybe) is normal (hum), but the Dolby without a doubt has issues.
