Thanks everyone for listening...and keep the thoughts coming! This one's still really rought, and I need suggestions.
Powderfinger: Didn't have to track them to many times...just enough to get them right!
Kramer: Still no metronome, I'm afraid...
WATYF: I agree about Creed's lame drums. Screw that.
Miles: I think that most of the people that like this band probably wouldn't like Creed, or would find it funny even if they did like Creed. Just my opinion. And as for the first "creed" after the a capella, personally, I think it sounds fine!
Tex: This song isn't a parody. A parody would be covering 'Sacrafice' and giving it new funny words that make fun of the original song. This song isn't made to be a parody, but an original song that makes fun of an unoriginal band. I will still pass along the idea to the band...I think it's damn brilliant!
Wes: Yeah...I compress the piss out of things, but it's just my style. Again...remember that this is a ROUGH mix...and I do agree that there is a bit too much compression on the VOX. But I also think that the drums don't cut through enough, and the guitar tone needs a lot of work, and sometimes the vocals are too loud, and I could go on forever, but again, this is a rough mix! Make sure you check this song when it's done...I'll make sure and post it.
I got the gig by recording a few other bands around here in Nashville, and then these guys asked me to record/produce them.
It was pretty much done in a bedroom. Drums are as follows (shhhh...don't tell anybody...it's a secret!)
Kick: AKG D112
Snare: SM57
Toms: SM57's
OH's: GrooveTube AM52's
That's it. As for the overheads, I wouldn't even really call them overheads, I used them more as cymbal mics. I go for total isolation in micing. The mics about 8 inches above the cymbas, 3/4 out to the edge of the cymbal, on the side of the cymbal that's farthest away from the drummer.
All of the drums went through Aphex 107 mic pres, and as always, a LOT of compression, and massive EQ. I'm never afraid to compress the piss out of anything, nor am I afraid to eq it until it's nowhere near the original tone.
Everyone...please remember...it's a rough...it's only the first mix that I've done on this song. I usually do at least 3 or 4 mixes before I get it right. I wanted to post this to get some opinions, and your opinions have defintely helped. Just wait for the new mix! Before I posted this, I was just sitting here eyeing my computer and my 2480 in a most wicked manner, wondering what to do with this mix.
I've come to a conclusion...it needs more power. So that's what I'm gonna work on.
Okay...sorry for the epic...thanks, all, for listening, and please check the new mix when I'm done. And still, don't be afraid to give more suggestions, they are ALWAYS MORE THAN WELCOME!
