Daniel, I think the erase/record head is the problem if severe bleed-thru can be heard.
Did you try record with just 456 tape or ?
Buying new heads, give Joe a try and see if maybe he can help you.

I have one Akai GX-270 D for parts, but this is a Quad model (SS)and has different heads...

Good Luck

Thanks again!

Hi Rolf!

Just wanted to let you know that I received the package yesterday (Wed). Thanks so much once again! I will be putting all the things you sent to good use probably today. I thank you and so does the AKAI ;)

Nice restoration

Hi - sorry to jump in (a couple of months after the event).

I was really interested to read about your restoration. I've just picked up a GX-265D with (apparently) very little use and hope to clean it up and try it out soon, with a view to creating some better archives of recordings my father made in the mid-late 70's on an Akai 4000DB (and before that an old Ferrograph).

I've found a lot of useful information on my model (inlcuding the service manual) at http://www.dantiques.com/tapedecks/akaimodels.htm. There's more info on Akai's at http://slbender.exactpages.com/akaidt.html. Either of these sites might have some useful info for your unit.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll send some pictures of the 265.
