Hi, all. Here's my deal;

I've got a neat new Tascam 788 digital recorder that has MIDI in and MIDI out ports. But those ports are very sad. They have no one to play with.

On my computer I have Finale 2001. On it I have lots of songs that seem to use MIDI to play. Those songs are also very sad. They want to be on a "real" recorder.

When I bought the Tascam, the dealer gave me this cable that has MIDI inout on one end and a joystick port on the other. This seems like the golden connection, the way to get the computer to talk to the Tascam in its own digital way.

But my question is, now what?! Can I get the songs on Finale to record on the Tascam? I suppose I should just give it a whirl and see what happens, but I wanted a little expert advice before jumping in.

Danke!

From the TASCAM 788 manual:

"Also, MIDI In and Out jacks are provided for syncing your audio tracks to synthesizer and software-based sequencers or other devices that use MIDI Time Code, MIDI Machine Control and MIDI Clock."

The only signals the TASCAM will understand are synchronization signals from equipment using MTC or MMC or MIDI clock. In order to play back some tune in Finale, you need a synthesizer, whose output you will direct to (two of the) inputs on the 788.
