Thanks to all of you that replied to my question about multiple-purpose microphones for vocals and drums/percussion with a lot of low-pitched, bass sounds.

I have been doing some online research and read that according to the manufacturer, the ATM25 is good for both vocals and kick drums –has anybody here used it to record voices, though?

Thanks again…

J.

I have used it to record back - up stuff, it sounds pretty cool..... Real fat with a big bottom,

It could be interesting.

It's not going to be airy enough for a more modern pop or hiphop vocal track.

It does have a noticeable midrange scoop to it, so on the right voice, it might sound fuller than most dynamics ... although it does have a noticable rise around 2-3K, which could be a very good thing on some voices but very bad on others.

The hypercardiod pattern will give it more proximity effect than most ... so you're basically looking at something that could either be amazing or a total disaster, :D depending on who's using it, and the context in which it's being used.

An engineer I worked with recently used one as a secondary vocal mic, set about 2 feet back from the LDC (a Soundelux) he was using.

Shure mics and ATM25

Thanks everybody and especially thanks to Daisy.

Daisy: what you said makes a lot of sense… Which one of these would you say is more “neutral” and multi-purpose then?

SM-58
SM-57
Shure Beta 57
ATM25

Thanks again...

ATM25

SM57 (if you have a pop filter) or SM58 (if you don't have a pop filter). They don't have as much low end as the ATM25 which will make them better multipurpose mics. You can easily use them both on snare, elec guitar, toms & vocals. Not too shabby on kick, though they won't have the low end of the ATM25 so down the road you'll likely want to pick an ATM25 up. You can't go wrong with any of these mics but if you can have only one I'd go with Shure.

Electrovoice RE20 is the mic you want for multipurpose on vocals and kick drum.

The Heil PR30/PR40 might also be worth considering, but I haven't personally used them.

The RE20 rocks, it's a lot more money, even used. The Beyer M88 is a great mic for vocals/kick drum too. The ATM25 is a good mic to have.

Buy used.:)
