how would you guys compare the sound of an art tube mp to an m-audio dmp2 (not dmp3!)

for use with delta 44/computer.

Thanks...just wonderin

...transparent....care to discribe? is this a good or bad thing..haha

I think it's a good thing. Transparent meaning it just provides good, clean gain without imparting any of it's own sonic stamp or characteristics. The dmp2 is basically the same thing as the dmp3, only there's no pad and it's phantom power isn't ideal for some mics (it doesn't kick out the full 48) when you have both channels running.

These make it somewhat limiting, but even with the drawbacks, I've always been a big fan of the m-audio mic pres and I'd get one in a second if I found a good deal on ebay or something.

You got one for sale?

nope, just bought one...haha

$160 for mxl v63m and maudio dmp2....bought it from ryan on this board (dont know his posting name though!) haha.

i should get it in the mail shortly.

Transparent can be a meaningless term. Remember, "accuracy" is rarely your goal unless you suddenly transformed into a symphony.

The Tube MP is a good sounding preamp.

slack, but BETTER then the dmp2 in your opinion?

1/2 the price, 1/2 the inputs...

i assume they are kinda the same...minus the "tube" sound the art brings

Can't tell you that, sorry :(

You know it was sonusman who got me using the Tube MP...but when I got it I couldn't make a decent sound for the life of me, so I started looking for "transparent" preamps...ended up with some stuff like the SX202....blah! The Tube MP grit is really desirable IMO on things like vocals and guitar.

But, I am admittedly an idiot in this area...honestly.

The DMP 2 has very little headroom. It distorts at the slightest excuse, which made it pretty much useless for the way I work.

I can't tell you anything about the ART, but if that is one of your choices, maybe you should find something more useful than the DMP2 for a comparison.

I have never used either of these two units. But what is interesting about the ART Tube MP is that a lot of the posts I see about it aren't exactly stellar. It gets some good comments about it's ability to act as a direct input for bass, but then gets slammed by many others for its sound on other instruments. I avoided it because of this inconsistency, and went with the audio buddy, which to my ears is ok, but nothing special. I would imagine from what I have read, that overall, the DMP 2 would be the better buy.

i like my Art studio mp.........have used it for everything (up until i got my mackie board this week)...but i still think it's great..honestly. i've had it for almost a year...

it took a while to really know how to use it though....i made a mess of things in the beginning....

i might try installing this mullard tube a friend gave me...i dunno..

I have an "ART Tube MP Studio V3" that I got as a bass DI (another color) for my little studio and it works ok. It's never been used here for anything other than a bass DI, so I can't comment about it as a mic preamp.

I use ART Tube Preamps all the time; as the original Tube MP, as the Tube MP Studio, and as the Dual MP, and I love them. You can take a signal and make it as clean, or as warm, as you want. All it takes is taking the time to see what various settings on the pre and post gain sounds like - you can get whatever you want out of the ART Tube MPs if you take the time to find it. Also, they've been VERY dependable as preamps... never had a problem with any of them (all 8 channels!). Don't be afraid to try an ART Tube MP preamp... they're great units for the money.
