Hi to all,:)
I'm trying to sort out a couple of questions on my newly acquired Akai X5000w reel to reel and hope someone in the forum may be able to answer a couple of questions.

Can anyone tell me what the function of the switch marked Automatic On-Off switch does? its located between the Play and Rewind-FF levers.

Does anyone know a source of good quality belts for this unit? I checked a couple of sites but no one listed this model.

I found when you first turn the unit on both VU meters pegged for a second, which I would expect. The right goes down immediately to 0 the left goes down very slowly to about 1/3 of the scale right away and then goes down to 0 after being on for a minute or two.

Also looking for a owners manual explaining the functions of this deck. I've been out of reel to reel recording for quite some time .Picked up this unit to rebuild so the kids could hear that dad could rock in my younger years. Still have all my tapes just nothing to play them on.

Any ideals or suggestions would be welcome !

If I recall correctly that selects a mode where the power to the entire machine is automatically shut of when the tape reaches the end, in either direction.

Thanks for the reply!
Hoping to find a manual for the unit. Also that I can get some ideals about the VU problem I mentioned. It would be great if I can get this deck up and running.

The VU meter issue is probably an electrolytic cap' leaking but re-forming once power is applied to it.
If you leave the machine powered up for a few hours the problem might sort itself. If not you will need a schematic to find the offending cap.

Another problem with tape machines that have been left a long time is that the rec/play switch contacts become tarnished. Run the deck in and out of record mode a dozen times or so as this often cleans the switches. If not DE-OXIT (I would use WD-40 but some people get angry about it!) .

Been a loooong time since I saw inside an Akai, might use relays? Always sus!

Dave.
