Let someone who knows what they're doing set up your guitar. I have a guy near me who does repairs on guitars and basses. He does excellent work and it's pretty cheap.
At what point do you think Greg becomes too stupid to work on his own (or even better - his Wife's)guitar? Do you think he is capable of changing his own strings or could he F%k that up too? Sounds like he is willing to write off the guitar if he stuffs up the works. Sometimes you have to break things to learn how they work. Sometimes you learn a lot without managing to break anything. Go for it Greg!! Let us all know how it works out.

Thanks for the very informative thread.

I machine steel and titanium down to ten-thousandths of an inch, so I think I can manage rubbing a fucking saddle against sandpaper, and if I get really brave, I might even try a belt sander! And if I ruin it, I can go buy another. How much could a fucking saddle cost anyway? I'll just make one from cast iron if it's more than like 10 bucks. :D

And besides all that, it's a fucking acoustic guitar. They suck anyway.

I hate acoustic guitars with a passion...

I don't know (why, but) I fucking hate acoustic guitars. They're so lame.

...I can rub it against a sheet of sandpaper as good as any jackassed luthier. I have tools. I can turn a truss rod. If I break something, then no big deal because I hate acoustic guitars anyway...besides all that, it's a fucking acoustic guitar. They suck anyway.

Man, oh, MAN, Greg- did somebody who played acoustic guitar take your lunch money from you when you were a kid?? I don't recall ever seeing so much invictive and anger directed at any inanimate object. Get some therapy, man!

And referring to luthiers as "jackasses," after muttley gives you the benefit of his experience is just ingrateful. Well, it's disrespectful, too.

I mean, hate on me if you want, but I didn't go into the drum forum (I suppose drums are your primary instrument, correct me if I am wrong) and say something inflammatory like "I fuckin' HATE drums." Really, bud, that sort of thing is not cool. And while I have broached the subject, all I ever meant to do was comment on other post you made, in a good-natured way (again, I might be wrong, but that's how I remember it.) I am a bit perplexed by how much you flame me- unless that, too, is meant in jest. If that is the case, I am only perplexed that you haven't said something like "Hey, man, can't you recognize a freakin' JOKE?" Really, I think you are a talented and witty guy. Not sure how this bad blood started between us.

I would love to see your face when that truss rod snaps in two!:laughings: That will REALLY get your attention!:D

Maybe a dumb question, but can you not just teach her to play on an electric?

I don't know about anyone else. But I for one found this post immensly useful to the subject matter and it most certainly was worth the time the author put in to it.

Yup, I could, but she wanted an acoustic, and she'll be more inclined to practice if it's comfortable to play.

That makes sense. I didn't entirely realise it was her acoustic. I though it was some old beater you had laying around or something.

It is totally hers. I never touch it. It's been in it's case for like 2 years. I've used it one time, on one joke song. I don't know if I mentioned this already, but I really hate acoustic guitars. :D

on a cheapie like the Squire it's entirely possible there are shims under that bridge. They'll be thin pieces of plastic that you'll still see down in the slot when you take the saddle out.
IF it has them ...... you can just pull out 1 or 2 of those and might not have to sand the saddle at all so look for those when you pull the saddle.
OPtherwise just follow Muttleys' procedure ....... you'll have no prob.
She quit on the sax idea?

Not exactly, she never knew that I was gonna buy her one. I tiptoed around and dropped some really subtle hints just to gauge her interest, and she showed none, so I'm putting the sax on the back burner for a little bit. I couldn't find one reasonably priced anyway. Them bitches be expensive.

no shit ..... that's why I was somewhat distressed when my best sax ever fell over a balcony a few years back!

:laughings:

That's stevieb for you. If it's not some totally dumb n00b question like "how do I turn the volume knob on my guitar", he's completely useless.

Volume knobs could be turned?!?!!?!? xD

Anyway, I had a cheapo acoustic that had the same problem. Just do what everyone else said. Sand it down. Make sure you do it on a super flat surface to keep the angle. Messed that up before...

I turned these from walnut for the 8 string lap steel I just built.

Anyway, jesus fuckin' christ, don't be such a chickenshit kunt. Do it already.

I'm guessing that guitar came with a 011-052 set of strings, wich is very standard. Try switching to 010-048 set of strings.
Or buy her a cheapo Classical guitar, thats what most beginners use over here. They are way more easy to play, get her a 3/4 guitar.

I'd start with lighter strings, it really does make a huge difference without having to get a new set up unless you're really anal, which I'm guessing you aint mate.

As for saxophones a friend at work yesterday was asking about acoustic/electric guitars, then said she was thinking about seeing if she could get a trade in allowance on a Yamaha sax she had from high school. I strongly advised against that, and suggested looking into the value of the sax first.

I used to have a 3/4 size Harmony acoustic guitar. It was small bodied, but had a regular neck. It was actually the only acoustic I've ever liked. I had it for at least 20 years. It was fun to dink around on. The headstock broke off so it went into the trash.

Acoustic guitars are for men only.
Because of the nature of the instrument it takes a man to play an acoustic guitar.
But the women play them too.
So, get a capo and you get instant lower action.
And / or buy some light gage electric guitar strings.
