I don't know what to think of this one. Comments and Critique welcomed. Thanks for taking the time. It's a small file. 96Kbps.

It's called America. But it has nothing to do with America, so...

Flakey site.

Great example of the importance of a human drummer.

This has a very loose feel and sounds like it was conceived quite quickly - has that freshness about it - which is emphasized to good effect on the ending (although the fade out arguably should have been started a little later - seemed like a long fade).

Those pauses at the beginning might be questioned by some - I personally like it.

I played it three times - the third time for the simple enjoyment of it.

How do you record acoustic guitars (ie type of mic and placement)?

Lennon would of been proud to do this song. Well produced and great recording to boot. Very creative song writing, my drummer would kill people to get a chance to record with you...really. wazz up with the doodling on the guitar right at the very end?:D Loved the tune Emeric...

Couldn't get in with your name and password, couldn't sign up using my own. Flakey, indeed. Sent them a stern criticism.

Hi psmith66. Thanks for listening to it. The acoustics were recorded with an MXL603s pointed at around the 12th fret, a foot or so away. It was put together fairly quickly, so if it sounds a little rough this is why. The fade should be different, agreed.

David - Thanks for the feedback. Guitar noodling at the end for sure! I guess a quicker fade or edit will solve that.

Dobro, I changed my password - but I just changed it back again to 5150 so it should work for you.

Nice......nice.

Not crazy about the guitar solo. I would prefer a different ending like going back to the empty guitar strum.

Could use a synth pad to add more atmosphere and to break the constint Acoustic strum.

Nice.

Nice feel!

I like the groove of the song, the recording of the acoustic guitar and the vocal harmonies. I agree with a previous post of John Lennon...sounds like his style.

What would I change?

Fade out faster
Cut out the guitar solo or do a short melodic solo on nylon string guitar or steel string acoustic.

Good job.

Hey, you're a pretty good drummer. Like the last two posters said, nice feel (said the actress to the bishop...).

Sonically, it's beyond comment for me - knowing the equipment you're using (and *not* using), I'm amazed you can get sound this good out of a home studio. I got one question: why'd you mix the acoustic higher than the electric during the break? What would it have sounded like with the electric more in front, so more of its sound can be heard? Not a suggestion, just a question.

Musically, what you're doing with backup vox is the bit that I like the best - you've really developed this well.

Lyrically - a bit of a departure, yeah? I like lyrics that operate on more than one level. Political and personal is an interesting laminate.

Oh, and this tune has got the longest file name I've ever seen. :D

nice song!

I think the recording is good too... the e.guitar sounds a little thin though... :)

For us who don't know, mind sharing with us your setup?

Beatlesque.. ;) Reminds me of something.. dunno...
Cymbals need some work, kinda too, umm, something... can't place it.
Good song so far..
at the guitar solo.. I like it, good and spacey, fits the song and mood... although its getting a tad long, I know how it is though :)
Oh,,, its fading out from the solo? Dig... cool song, caught me off guard... good job..

Shailat: The guitar solo is a bit odd. I only like the first couple of notes, then it turns into noodling. Maybe drop it out and make the end sound like the beginning like you suggest.

ajgrossman: Nylon or acoustic solo, maybe maybe. Yeah the fade is rough for sure. Thanks for listening.

dobro: I'm hoping I can get it sounding better, I think I can. I did a bit of rough limiting and I messed up the dynamics when the electrics and drums come in. I want that part to be louder, but I think I acheived the opposite. I want the electrics more for support of the acoustics, not upfront but this may change.

Leeking: The electrics probably sound thin because I recorded them through a very cheap, very small amp. The rest of my equipment, typical home recording setup.

PIII 800 computer
Delta 1010
Mackie 1402
Art MP
Event 20/20
Rode NT1 on vocals
MXL 603's on overheads and acoustics.
D112 kick
421 Floor tom
57 high tom
57 snare
Premier drum kit
Guild acoustic
Tele electric
Fender Jazz bass

tubedude: Cymbals might be a touch loud and unbalanced. I liked them better on this one than my last post though. I thought this might end up around 3 minutes... but ... It may end up longer when I change the end around. Thanks for the feedback.

That's some mighty fine noodling

Great job! :)

I love the sound of the acoustic at the begining (MXL 603s added to the list), but it kinda wanders around in the stereo field (about 20sec or so into the song), it jumps from left to right pretty quickly which is kinda distracting when listening to it with headphones.

I don't think the cymbals are to loud neccessarily, just out of tune I guess. The one you use alot sounds pretty good but you need one higher that you can alternate to occasionally, and that other one (the one panned to the left) just doesn't quite cut it.

I think you just need to get rid of the electric all together (maybe try the acoustic strumming the background chords), I think the "kinda week" electric is just distracting your attention away fromt he awesome sound that is the "acoustic guitar". But if you can get the electric to get some feeling and "umph" to it then go for it, but otherwise it sounds better all acoustic IMO.

But other than those minor details (and the long pauses), that was a great tune, very enjoyable. :)

Noodling RULES!!! :D

Emeric,

I liked the tune, good lyrics, but I agree with the others that the guitar solo at the end was not well integrated. I personally (IMHO) think that a guitar solo at the end is OK. Try some different effects and chops.

One thing might be to run a track using the acoustic guitar as the lead and then on the mixdown insert a guitar effect or processor into the channel.

Regards

Tekker: Yeah the guitar wanders a bit for sure. I've got in the habit of double tracking all acoustic stuff, and unless I play it really tight this is what happens. The mp3 encoding may bring that out even more. As for cymbals, I'm thinking of using a bit of splash when I retrack. Get rid of the electrics.. maybe. I might try double tracked single notes rather than chords. The pauses yes.. I'm going to keep the drums going through the pause before the bridge, the others will remain. Thanks for the feedback.

Sonic Misfit: The solo at the end is not very well constructed, agreed, I only like about the first 10 seconds or so and then it's pretty loose. Maybe acoustic solo as ajgrossman suggested, or maybe none. Thanks for listening.

Pretty cool emeric. I especially like what you did with the cymbals and electric guitar...very nice sounding.

The acoustic guitar is all over the place as someone mentioned above. Can I ask what preamp you used with the 603? The sounds you're getting there sound very similar to what I get with a 603 through an ART Tube MP.

Slackmaster 2000

Hey Slack, thanks for checking it out. Actually I used the preamps in the Mackie 1402. When I retrack I think I will get rid of one of the guitars and maybe track the other channel with the Nashville tuned guitar... I don't know....

Emeric,

I tried the UserID and password you posted but it keeps telling me it's invalid...

Interesting...I've been using one of Harvey's 603's, and I was sort of disappointed because the mic didn't seem to have much air...kind of boomy too. After a while, though, I thought maybe the ART was responsible for the lack of brightness....but now I'm not sure again.

What do you think overall of the 603?

Slackmaster 2000

I think overall they are a great mic for the money. I still have the C1000's which I use for the odd thing, but I like the 603's better. The guild is a boomy beast of guitar to begin with and I didn't spend a whole lot of time messing with mic placement. I didn't EQ the guitars either, so I could clear it up with a bit of cut. I'm more of a beleiver in the room giving the 'air' not the mic. I'm in one dead room and I think that is a big part of my problems.

But, for $70 really can't go wrong. I prefer them on overheads to the C1000's. Their small as well which makes it physically easier to set up XY with the rack 'T' thing I have, but that's not a big selling point I suppose!

I PM'd you AC, that java site is.... ok but I really hate their policy of having to be a member to d/l anything. Get what you pay for I suppose.

Nice tune. I DL ed it. The background vocals are awesome and I really like the sound of the kick drum. Another fine effort. Sounded like the song lost a little focus at the end(lol) but otherwise, sounded great
