So I just got the new Musicians Friend and inside the back there is a Epi LP for $999(list 1537) and a Epi Dot for $1149 (list 1768)!!!?? I see that they're called "elite" but, come on! Whose going to pay $1000 for an Epi when you can get a used (maybe even new) Gibby for that or less? It's really nuts to me, I hope people don't fall for it.

My God! You can get a hand-built Heritage for that much!

its simple...they are jacking up the price of the epi's...trying to get a peice of the "jap" strat market. there is a guy on another thread that just ordered a jap strat for 1200 bucks...an american standard is under 1000

That is interesting. Especially because I picked up my Les Paul Standard for $800.

Yeah, $1200 is insane, considering you can get a better custom strat (Pearlcaster etc.) for less than that.

ur all some dumbass nuts i play an epiphone sg g-310 1995 and that guitar is fuckin kick ass so i don't wanna hear if u don't like the price then don't buy it simple as that i'm not tryin to be a dick but this thread is stupid.....my $.02 worth

kid-
I have owned Epi's also. I had an Epi LP that I wish I never got rid of. I also had a Dot that I loved. But I paid $350 for each of those new. I think Epi's are great $300-400 guitars, I really do. But for $1000 you should be looking to the next level in instruments. I paid only $1000 for my PRS CE22...and it's a top notch guitar.

I'm not dissing Epiphone, just the pricetag.

i was talking to a luthier last week (he's real good) and he told me that the epi's that they are selling in the record stores
(the lowest priced les paul style epi)
cannot be set up without taking the tailpice off and filling in the holes and redrilling and setting it....cause he has yet to see one that has the correct placement from the factory....TOTAL CRAP!

the work to set it up costs more than the guitar

LOL

Are these American dollars?

sounded like a good idea

I was actually really excited to hear about this Elite line of Epiphones. I already own a Epi Casino (and a '94 gibson LP studio) and I wanted something a little cooler looking but can't afford a Gib 335. I figured this would sit right between those in price/quality and would make sense as an upgrade. I thought maybe these Elites would come with cool paintjobs or a bigsby (which I'd also like instad of the hard tail I currently have). I don't see the goddamn difference here! I think I'm just gonna go for the '65 John Lennon Epi Casino before he stripped it.

How about the Epiphone Hummingbird and EJ-200 acoustics? I know I'm being seduced by the look of these guitars, but the price isn't bad either. I'm going to give them a serious looking over.

if i had 1000 bucks to spend on a guitar i don't think i would even consider a new guitar. hell, guitars are like wine they get better with age (if they arn't cheap peices of shit to start with). There are some really good deals out there on used guitars, less than half the retail price.

if you take care of it and maintian it a good guitar will outlive you...

so, just use a les paul for example
and im just gonna use round numbers for example sake.

lets say the average les pauls life span is 40 years. that means even if you get one 10 years old you still have 30 years to play it

So, if a new one costs $3000 and a nice used one averages $1000...

why pay 3 times what its worth to "drive it off the lot"..so to speak?
you end up with a $1000 guitar when you get home either way

i want someone else to take the $2000 loss...so, if i had $1000 to spend on a guitar im looking for the used gibson, not the new epiphone

Or you could buy a new Heritate 150 for the same price as that used Les Paul, which it plays cirlce around.

Considering that these guys built guitars for Gibson during the glory days, you can't go wrong with Heritage.

Jeez, soon enough i'll look like a Heritage sales rep.

New 2002 Les Paul Standards sell for about $1600-1700 and Les Paul Classics sell for $1400. Les Paul Studios sell for about $1000. You can find last years LP Standard's for $1400 at some stores but the 2002 models have better pickups in my opinion.

Les Pauls usually sell for about 50% of their suggested retail price.

I love Les Paul guitars

BTW- I'm damn interested in the Epi Elite's. They are using better wood, bone nuts and saddles, better pickups, better finishes, and most importantly they are made in Japan. I can't wait to try out the Elite archtops.

When I buy a guitar, I decide how much I want to spend and then I look at guitars in that price range, new and used. I buy the one I feel is the most for the money and I don't care where it comes from or who's name is on the headstock. All I care about is how it sounds and how it plays.

so whats a used heritage go for...$500?...so why would you want to pay $1000 for a guitar thats gonna be worth maybe $500 bucks when you get home with it.

in a nut shell:
brand new= suggested retail price
used= way under suggested retail price

some examples of used guitars that i have purchased:
1966 fender strat for $150
1960 gretch country gentleman with a blonde finish...traded a jap SG copy that i had less than $200 in for it
1973 gibson les paul custom for $100 (it need a new nut and one of the pickups was dead...easy fix)

bottom line....the guitars gonna last a lifetime anyway so don't pay too much for it.
the only thing your gonna get out of a brand new one is a warranty. you need a warranty on a new one cause it may have some shoddy work from the factory. a used one is already broke in and has stood the test of time.

Wow! You've gotten some sweet deals.

The best I ever did was $250.00 for a 1964 Gibson Firebird and $250.00 for a 1964 Blonde Fender Bassman 2X12 amp.
