Thanks, Legion. I appreciate that. If you could do some part of it to get me started on the right course, I could perhaps take it from there. The end goal is to eventually learn to do this myself. The song is here:
YouTube - Killing Joke - The Wait. If I can hear how you interpret it, it...
I tried drumming, freestyle over the top of it. From start to finish. What a blast... It sounded great while I was playing... then I played it back....
Does anyone know where I can get trained chimp?
:(
Oh god, this is frustrating. I'm having so much trouble trying to do this electronically. I got my pattern to fit somewhere in the middle of the original song but it doesn't work all over the song. I still don't understand how bpm tempo fits in here - as it could be anything! To try and...
Thanks for the informative advice, chaps. I skipped music theory in school so some of my questions may appear assinine. However, I'm slowly getting to grips with the nuts and bolts mainly by ear. I've come to a point where a little theory seems essential to move on...
I wonder if anyone could...
I have this burning question but I don't quite know how to ask it. Okay, here goes... I want to set a tempo to a song so that I can attempt a cover. I'm trying to create a simple 'guide track' with a click sound.
I've recently discovered my software allows me to 'tap' the tempo but I don't...
Have a look at EZDrummer. I've never used it but I've heard good things about it.
I know as well as anyone, there's no substitute for a proper banger but you can certainly get away with electronic drums - but you've gotta have something...
I have in the past banged out a rythym using an...
Not for me. Exactly why I dumped Reaper and went back to FL. I'm what you'd call a casual user and I need MIDI control. Reaper sucks at MIDI which the makers freely admit on their own website. Admittedly, they will probably improve this over time.

I believe the education edition software is merely a price description. If you can prove you're a music student, you get a discount.
I have Producer Edition (I didn't know about 'Signature Bundle') and it does pretty much anything I want it to do, plus I'm still exploring it's possibilities...
Not really, because if he wants fancy amps and instruments, chances are, Reaper won't be quite enough. He will need to go in search of those extra VSTs to build himself a complete solution. For a start, anyone wanting to capture live instruments or vocals will need additional recording...
If you go for FL, then you should assess what you need carefully and make sure you buy accordingly. Producer Edition is about the best it gets and I'd recommend it to avoid future frustrations. The other versions are quite limited, more like toys and so you'll probably end up using Reaper...
Ah, bollocks. I've scrapped this idea now and ripped out the desk. I'm going for a more flexible approach.
Thanks for the advice though... I'm right near a window and a radiator... oh and a bloody great corner. Somehow, I really don't think following any of the good advice I've found here is...
Pro Tools and a Mac and a really, really looooonnnng mixing desk... :D
Heh... you ain't gonna get industry standard in freeware... but I don't think you need worry about that. Reaper, IMO, is a VERY good way to get started. Personally, I use FL Studio for tracking and Reaper just for final...
When I was a kid, some wanky 'sound engineering' student showed me the 'proper' way to coil cables. It was probably the only thing he'd really learned but I'm sure it's right. As I coil, I spin them slightly like you said and it keeps them straight. I've been doing it like that for about 20...
Thank you everyone for taking the time to listen and being honest and constructive. I really have something to go on now.
It takes me a while cos I can only grab a few hours here and there for mixing but that's good because I always come back with a fresh set of lugs.

I roll 'em up, wrist to elbow (as you're supposed to) and sling 'em in the draw marked: "XLR Cables". Funny that... the draws were already marked because the chest itself came out of Bob Lamb's studio.
My cables come in a cardboard sleeve, so to keep them from 'mating' inside the draw I slip...
I think tubes create much more heat than a domestic solid state integrated amp. NADs do run a little warmer than most but I really don't think it's going to cause as much trouble as all that. As long as it's vented before reaching the speaker, it shouldn't be a problem.
I can only go so far...
Thanks, I'll look into that. You're right, I was really taking my cues visually. I'll keep them upright and think again about the layout. It's not that vital to change things around yet, everthing works fine - it's just a cosmetic thing, as the music stuff is in a shared use room. Thanks for...
Just looked more closely at some pictures again. Those 'side lying' monitors do appear quite different to how upright speakers would look on their sides.
Anyway, here's the finished result. Funny, it didn't turn out anything like my original design. Do you like what I've done with those old...
