Let's get rid of autotune

Auto-tune is the new loudness war.

Loudness already won a long time ago, and auto-tune is steadily kicking yall's ass. Choose better battles.

it's actually the new definition of "Weak".

its in websters dictionary now....

I got no love for auto-tune, but nothing I play or listen to uses auto-tune, so I couldn't care less if it takes over garbage genres like rap and pop. Let auto-tune kill em all.

Its too late to get rid of autotune. There aren't very many "singers" anymore, just "vocalists." These guys/girls can't sing and autotune is our only salvation so we don't look bad when an album bombs because a "vocalist" can't sing in key.

The Black Eyed Peas or Katy Perry wouldn't suck any more without auto-tune.

Haven't listened to much of Katy Perry to comment...but 100% on the Black Eyed Peas. They should lose the autotune and put a sock in Fergie's mouth...then they would sound good again.

I have no problem with fixing a note here and there in a track, which I'll do manually just to that note, but this need to simply plug autotune in-line with a signal and letting it ride the entire time is just silly, though it's true that the majority of regular autotune users are in the R&B/Hop styles, so I really don't care about it, let them use it if they think it sounds good...;)
......but I've heard it a few times on some more Rock style tunes, and it sounded even more lame.
It's getting so even the general public is able to hear it...which IMO only works against the artists using it all the time.

AFA those totally played out autotune "chirps" that are used as an effect in most every R&B/Hop tune...don't people realize how boring it's become???
It would be like every guitar player always using a wah pedal on every tune they did..... :D
I mean...use it once or twice on a song or two...but not on everything you do!!!

you dont 'listen' to katy perry you just check out her outfit. Black-eyed-peas? oh dear where to begin.. how about their "live" gig at the superbowl... um... yeah...

I dont mind auto tune as an effect.. and obvious and overused effect like so many "new" effects get like for a while before the novelty wears off (domo aregato mister roboto...)... but correcting your "artist" artificially in a way that can appeal to the People-of-Walmart market or the American Idol fanbase who are just deluded by their ignorance into thinking that Christina Ag is a good 'soul' singer or that Beyonce is anything but a model with a mic... hey SOMEONE bought ashley simpons's album!

If you hate the average pop listener who isn't entirely disgusted by the syrupy 'good'ness of it then get rid of autotune. I hate them because i find that taste in pop music goes hand in hand with a lot of undesirable attributes. but they wouldnt recognize that the engineering and production guys are who they should be idolizing - because the non-fashion model engineer busy autotuning the "suck" out of people doesn't look good with a fan blowing on him on a video set in a skimpy ridiculous outfit.

Funny how none of the ugly people in music use auto-tune to pull wool over fan's eyes.

Seriously, who gives a fuck? Who here listens to the mindless rap and pop stuff that utilizes auto-tune?

"Rockin' The Suburbs" - Ben Folds.

"... some producer with computers fixes all my shitty tracks...."

Ain't it the truth... it didn't come as standard on my standalone recorder all those years ago, so, alas, I have to do without it... challenging sometimes for someone who's not a natural singer, but hey... worth it in the end.

Auto-tune is no different than sample replacement on drums, and most people have no problem with that. Kick or snare doesn't sound quite right? Replace it. Vocals are a little off? Auto-tune! Just like with sampled drums, auto-tune is really only bad when it's ridiculous sounding, but by then, it's more used as an effect than it is to actually correct pitchiness. I don't use auto-tune and don't listen to anything that does, but I don't get the hatred towards it. It's just a tool used in really shitty genres. Yall shouldn't be listening to that shit anyway. :laughings:

When I think of auto tune I think of this:
ugly beer.webp

Except that Auto Tune...Helping talentless singers record.

It is completely banned in my sessions, if they want auto tune coz they can't sing go somewhere else. If they want a flanging vocoder effect I can do that but they must sing in tune first.

P.S: Cher has a lot to answer for.

Alan.

Sort of what I was getting at with my "toupee" comment. We only notice bad toupees. If it's good, you don't know it's there. When auto-tune is over-done and stupid, you hear it. If it's just used for subtle correction and done well, you don't know it's there.

well I listen to REAL rap = but that doesnt count having standin "featuring..." random whiney-croonie-wanna-be singers for the breaks in half the tracks on your album, just a buncha thugz yellin like it is. Urban punk? we definitely need more names for genres.

(edit: sorry intarwebz glitchy made me respond to greg le b.s. comment about "who here listens to rap?")

autotune is the enemy of the truly talented out there and the boon of the pop-commercialized-packaged-cheese we are ALL forced to listen to while the producers laugh there way to the bank. At least Ashlee Simpson was kinda hot - and had a name behind her - so okay that'll do. cha ching... money that would have otherwise been spent by less saturated audiences on more interesting real music they might listen to on local radio if it wasnt owned by the payola of people who produce market researched doo doo to fill the airwaves of your local grocery store while you wait in line to buy a beer. WE ALL LISTEN TO IT WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT.

I think a 'real' music scene would emerge for a lot of talented unexplored people if the standard of glossy frosting wasnt so expected to be 'that' sound.

this thread is pretty lame...if you don't like autotune, don't use it and don't listen to crap that contains it. People always whine about how it's an unfair thing, or how it makes anyone be able to "sing." I say who cares...get over it. As for the "truly talented" people that autotune is the enemy of, if they are truly talented, they will overcome it and you have nothing to worry about.
