Let's get rid of autotune

I could care less about autotune. As mentioned at the beginning of this thread if it's done right you won't notice it.Most vocal tracks are comped together anyway out of a couple vocal tracks using the stongest parts.Don't see anyone whining that no one does their vocals in one pass anymore.

What gets me more mad about autotune than the people with no talent that use it, is the people who are talented and have great voices that have it. Its probably a producer's or label's decision, but hearing people with actual talent, then hearing the slight autotune effects on their voice is rather distressing. They don't need it. Why use it?

who uses it? do 'real' bands in clubs use autotune to sound polished? the only ones who use it are gigantic pop sensations... you'd think if their gigantic core of production team types who cast them as frontwoman would just get a better singer to make the big bucks off of their commercial investment... but instead... its gonna be another chat about katy perrys tits... becasue the phenomenon of loath-able pop music is defined by both cliches. if you are awesome enough to make millions in the biz maybe you should sing? never mind ashlee simpson is as deserving of fame as any long-time musician without a hot sister and she even co-wrote some of their stuff according to the eMpTyVee hype a couple years ago. yeah they try.

I have something to say about pitch correction. If you feel the need to give an opinion about it being right or wrong, then there seems to be a defensive retaliation based upon personal experience or a sense of self doubt. I myself use pitch correction when needed just as I would an eq. If it helps to get the music to sound the way an artist wants it, then it is what is necessary. Just another tool in the box. It would be great if everyone had perfect pitch, tone, technique, smell, attitude..........Sometimes, art does not equate to perfection. I use everything in my arsenal to get there. Fuck you CHER for making it redundant! LOL!

When I lay 'pon my deathbed
Don't want nobody's moans
All I want for you to do
Is autotune my bones !

Good point.............

I think it's the main point. If any hack can be made to sound perfect with an electronic gimmick, then musicians with exceptional skills don't seem exceptional anymore.

Auto Tune was developed by a former seismologist

nuff said.

The problem is nobody cares except audio engineers, and I don't mix for audio engineers do you?

In fact, most can't can even hear it other than audio engineers.

I think that if you complain about vocal correction software, then you either cannot afford it, do not know how to use it, or you just suck so bad as a singer that it wont help you and you need an excuse for your inadequacies. Just like the click track debate. Get over it. It is just another tool enabling us to make things sound better. Not talking about using it as an overdone effect that has had long since overstayed its welcome.

Guitaristic said it well already: "if you don't like autotune, don't use it and don't listen to crap that contains it. People always whine about how it's an unfair thing, or how it makes anyone be able to "sing." I say who cares...get over it. As for the "truly talented" people that autotune is the enemy of, if they are truly talented, they will overcome it and you have nothing to worry about."

I second the motion to "Get Over It!"

I got over it, but it looked the same from above. :p

I dislike the sound of it when I can hear this particular effect it gives. Which is strange for me because I usually have quite liked 'abuse of equipment' effects. After all, that's how many of the sonic wonders we appreciate and use today developed in 60s and early 70s music. I feel the same way about the vocoder and more often than not, the ring modulator. I'm not at all bothered by the principle, just the sound. To me, pitch correction is no worse than pitch shifting if a guitar or mandolin note is a touch sharp or flat. But that sound. It's worse than Yoko Ono's "singing" !!

Actually, on reflection, it's a close call !

On further consideration, I'll take autotune !!

I Think the idea that autotune can make a bad or even average singer great, and unfair on the truly talented is a bit overly simplistic, There's alot more to great singing than perfect pitch, it's not going to put in emotion, give you a pleasing tone, convincing accent, dynamics, or give you great phrasing e.t.c.

yeah what he said.

I can write cool songs, good lyrics, melodies and try to sing them well, but I sing terrible when it comes to perfect pitch and being able to hold a tone without wavier - I still am working on getting better and conveying more emotion and style - but in the mean time I will be needing a lot of pitch correction - not auto-tune exactly but similar I guess

If you can hear the pitch correction, it's way past time to re-track the vocal. If you cant hear it and the song sounds good. Don't tell anyone and forget about it! :D
