I was going to vote in this thread. Which looked like it might be a fun one. But the simple fact someone put Bad Religion in the list. Just proves that anyone who would put them in a who killed metal thread clearly doesn't know metal themselves. I guess we need to establish the poll creators definition of metal?

Saying that Bad Religion is Metal, or remotely related to metal let alone killing it!!! Is like suggesting Mississippi John Hurt killed Celtic Punk?

I always get a good laugh when wankers go on their tirades about how Nirvana is responsible for poisoning the musical well with "talentless" music (hey, we all know that the only true path to talent is fast hands, right? :rolleyes:).

It's more accurate to say that the type of mainstream "metal" in question just rolled over and died from its own hairspray fumes, and Nirvana simply walked right by.

If you're a big, bitter metal fan, then get your band out there and make things happen musically to prove your point. All of this "Nirvana stole my lunch money" whining is not very becoming of you.
 
oh boy. i love these wankfests. i'm def gonna hit this shit.

1- metal isn't dead.
2- there are many many subgenres. hair, thrash, rap, stoner/doom, sludge, viking, nu, classical, progressive, death, industrial, and glam to name just a few.
3- hair metal is dead because it pretty much sucks.
4- korn, bon jovi, and stryper are all 3rd or 4th generation bands (bands that were influenced by a band that was influenced by a band that was influenced by an important band) and therefore not capable of singlehandedly killing a music genre.
5- nirvana ruled.
6- i have to agree that after cliff died, metallica went on to make some of the worst music known to mankind.
7- what are bad religion even doing on this poll?

Metal doesn't get killed, the people that listen to it grow up.

I guess it matters what age you are as to what Metal really is classified as:

In the 80's: it was Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy, Guns n' Roses, and everything with an electric guitar. I exclude Hair Bands out of the Metal category, because that shit ain't metal. Metal to me is Slayer, Obituary, Morbid Angel, all that badass shit. Before cd's!! Ya, I'm 33 fuck you.

90's: Everything that didn't fit into a marketable box, they called it Metal....
Grunge took over for a bit, and then fell off as the next hottest thing.
Pantera helped bring back metal by mowing everyone's faces off.
Korn was revolutionary (1st two albums, that's it) They single handledly brought 7 strings back (not you Steve Vai) and actually had a new sound......same as Nirvana having an actual new sound.

Then shit got cookie cutter:
Everything sucks nowadays because kids just play guitar hero and think that they can play guitar so they start a band and make shit noise. Except for the likes of Mastadon, Slipknot, Black Dalhia, Dillinger Escape Plan, and a few others.

Just a few gems off the top of my head from back in the day - we'll probably never have the pleasure of hearing supreme bands like this:
Faith No More, Alice in Chains, STP, Helmet, Tool, Rage, Primus, and others I can't remember right now.
 
I don't think it's dead, it's just evolved in to different styles.

On the good side...they are the only form of metal being played on the Classic rock stations and are selling tickets at the amplitheatres...heck Poison sold out a pretty big venue here a few weeks ago.

I agree - today there is more metal around than ever. If we're talking about popular metal, then you can't expect that to reign the popular charts forever. If you're willing to give stuff a chance, then you can discover an entire world of metal that would never be exposed to the mainstream media. Hell, Darkthrone and Mayhem only got exposure for the whole evil church burning thing.

I think Nirvana gets blamed because of the timing of everything. Bon Jovi helped pave the way with their smiley :) spin on metal. I never considered Bon Jovi as metal anyway. I call that glam rock (i.e. poison, warrant etc).
 
I did...that good radio metal became classic rock when I turned 35...but you gotta love being the only guy at an Asia meet-and-Greet at the local pub and getting to drink with the band for a couple of hours, when thier drinks are being comped...Having Kevin Debrow invite you along to go to a titty bar because at that point for a fan they would drive them to the airport and help them move.

nobody killed anything...Kurt chopped the heads off of that watered down 80s garbage and then they grew back on steroids...there's plenty of crap music out there...Nirvana was a great and honest band...it's not their fault that they ruled the world...metal is such a broad genre...and a lot of it is crap...it's like horror movies...there are a few good ones...but a lot of them are kinda cheap and laughable...
 
There's plenty of amazing bands and shit bands in any given genre. I've noticed a lot of people who listen to metal seem to have an elitist attitude, don't really get it. "amazing" and "shit" are just points of view no matter what point you argue.
 
I've been a big metal guy for years, but I've started to get bored of it. I still love bands like Psycroptic, Black Dahlia Murder, Mastodon, and Messhugga...and obviously albums like Master of Puppets and Rust in Peace will always have important places, but I'm listening to the likes of Muse, Manic Street Preachers and Radiohead more these days.

I think it's because recently everytime I've bought a metal CD, I've been massively dissappointed. So much cookie cutter stuff out there it's suffocating. It's all the same and to be honest I can't beleive a lot of these bands get signed. Need something more interesting.

Therefore, I declare, I killed metal. But not entirely, just selectively. Like a much needed ethnic cleansing.

It seems to me that metal is as healthy as it's ever been. It's expanded out into more sub-genres than jazz and has a more loyal fan base than virtually any rock idiom out there.

I also find it cute and quaint that people still blame Nirvana for metal's so-called downfall. Perhaps the "close minded" kids of the early 90's were looking for something with a little more substance than "she's my cherry pie".

If Nirvana killed 80's hair metal than I think the metal community owes them a debt of thanks.
