HA! I can do you one better- MIM Jazz, Lefty even, PLUS hardshell case, small Fender Bass amp AND leather strap- for $190! All in EXCELLENT condition!

I'm just glad no one has mentioned a FRETLESS Precision Bass- THAT, my friends, is an oxymoron!

Great deal on the MIM. I love mine!!!! Modded her a bit just to experiment. She was great out of the box. Now she's lights out

Well, that's a darn good question. Wondered about that myself. I really can't her any difference, or at least haven't noticed. Sorta concluded it was just marketing...

no difference between a single split humbucker in the middle or two single coils by neck and bridge? seriously? just marketing?

wow.... first time in my life i've heard anyone say that.

I finally went back and read the Ed Friedland quote earlier. I totally agree (what, I'm a better bass player than EF?)

Anyhow, just so everybody knows, I own a Precision with a fretless neck. I made up a decal that says "Fender Imprecision Bass" but I've never had the gall to put it on the peghead.

By the way, here's something interesting I picked up at another forum: the Fender Classic '50s Precision (I have one, and it's my Numero Uno) uses a .1 microfarad capacitor in its circuit and that seems to be part of its sound. I intend to order some from Stewmac as soon as I can figure out $30 worth of doodads to meet their minimum.

I'd say "get one of each," like I do when folks ask "Tele or Strat," but so far I've only got 2 P-basses (Squier Affinity & Fender Standard). I do have several Teles and Strats, so I can offer a qualified opinion on those. :) One of these days, I'll manage to get a Fender Jazz Bass.

I owned and played J basses for years, and had no idea what I was missing until I got my hands on a P. I'm a minimalist, too: the lack of bells and whistles is right up my alley (a friend who ordinarily plays an active Jazz played my P one time -- he said, "man! You just plug it in. No twiddling knobs"). These days I have the three Precisions, and that's all I need.
