It's a different transliteration for MK-012. They're pretty popular, particularly as drum overheads.

I like mine, wouldn't sell them for anything. I'd trade them gladly for their Neumann equivalents in a sec, though!

I had 184's and sold 'em, kept the oktavas and had them modded. way better IMHO

The little Oktavas actually sound pretty good generally, but definately differ from mic to mic a bit. I have had more than a dozen that sounded different, but none sounded "bad" persay. Red mics also make an affordable aftermarket large diaphragm add on that sounds pretty good on them as well and will increase the flexibility of the mic without too much cost.

Big thumbs up from me; love them on overheads and on most acoustic instruments. There have been times when I prefered them over KM184s, with the 012 sounding more like the original KM84.

Yes, searching is a good idea. Check google out too (add "review" to the search and you'll find many very positive reviews. You'll also find sites mentioning cheap Chinese knock-offs and how to identify them.

I like mine!

I have a matched pair

I bought them several years ago on the recommendation of my friend Richie Monroe (member here) and they are my absolute favorite mics for all sorts of applications (I've even used them in live shows).
I'm not saying that they are the best sdc's on the market, but they are pretty damned good and they'll stand up to and surpass many much more expensive sdc's.
They just don't come in fancy packaging with spiffy graphics, so the American market can't understand how they can be any good. (Also, the directions and specs that came with mine were in Russian and I had to have a friend translate it for me.)

Good to see you out here, Rimshot! I confess, I don't understand Big Kenny's preference for the Oktavas over KM184's but nonetheless, they are perfectly good mics. I use the Neumanns most of the time, but still pull the Oktavas out for rock or blues overheads, and for some small percussion- bells, chimes, triangle, bongos, etc. I do a lot of stereo recording of ensembles, mostly classical, and I find the Oktavas too colored for that. The odd thing is that for some folks, the MK012 is actually a pretty good vocal mic, although it takes 2 pop filters to keep the little buggers from popping. But what the hell? I bought my Oktavas at GC for $50 each, and I won't let them go, even with a pair of Neumanns in the cabinet. I think that says that they are damn good $50 mics.-Richie

They're useful mics. I've had trouble with the QC in the ones I purchased.

Once you start looking at matched pairs of tested ones (from the sound room?) I think the Josephson C42 starts looking more attractive.

I'm very pleased with the Josephsons. YMMV and all that.

You may very well find a great pair of MK-012s. It just wasn't in the cards for me.

Richard Monroe is a great person to take recommendations from. I have myself on occasion.:)

yea there selling me a pair for 120$

How do i know if there Russians or Chinese?

yea i didnt realize that there was fake... i think there fake since there "Oktava MC 012-01" not "MK 012"

Are they very different?

Part number doesn't tell you anything. The difference between MC and MK had to do with what country they were originally intended to be sold in, IIRC.

Nor does the A.S.M. mean that it isn't legit. They were the legitimate U.S. distributor of the real thing for years before they suddenly switched and started importing Chinese junk and selling it under the Oktava name.

You really have to read that page and look at the product. The things to look for are A. whether the contacts are silver (real) or bare copper (fake) B. whether they are shipped in the legit cases (the real cases have a push button on the front to unlatch them and don't have handles; the matched pair cases might be different... not sure), C. whether they come with the 10 dB pad (the real ones do, the fakes don't), and D. whether they come with a metal clip (real) or a plastic clip (fake).

Are they very different?

Completely. The Chinese version is just another harsh, brittle Chinese condenser.

yeah good points. Damn finally when i thought i had a good deal (since im looking for overhead mics) i find these Piece of SH*T mics ha. damn.

yea im trying to find good reasons why to get the Chinese ones.
