Okay, it's an "EMT PDM 156" - Just got the number off a plate on the back. From what I can tell, it ain't got no tubes :( - But it is also a limiter/expander, so it's got the built in idiot proof factor going for me there. We're still kicking the price around a bit, but it's gonna' be under $1,000 - I know, it's not like I'm cleaning out my 401K, but you'd have to know my wife, lol. "This box does WHAT again?...and can't you do that already?"

So I'll just have to show her this kickass thread and tell her to shut the fu... I mean... ROCK ON!!!

That is a pile of dough. Talk to Fletcher at Mercenary Audio on Monday. I bet he can tell you what it is, what its worth and of its as cool as you think it is.

Do a Google search on that box, and you'll see you are in good company. Couldn't find a picture of it though.:(

I could see everybodys posts, but had no way to join in--no message box. But I did see some drunk guy named harristhefuckface or something. I know this dude was drunk cause he was talking about using an E-Bow on the banjo. Mixmkr, I'm sure you wouldn't know anything about this guy would ya? :D

Thanks, man, but you've already told me to buy it, and like I always say, "you have to do what Al says if you wanna' not sound like shit." It's actually a mastering compressor (definitely stereo, but I honestly can't tell yet how many bands, lol...4, I think), but I've been running some guitar tracks through it, and vocals...crap, EVERYTHING just sounds better...I don't know if it's softer or warmer or just mushed up, lol... I've also found out that it was apparently used by some radio stations (oops)... so for everybody who just hates the sound of radio compression...well, I'll try to keep the gain at a reasonable level, lol.

Seriously, if you do that Google search you'll see a lot of mastering houses that have that box in their racks.

If everything on it works, and you like what it does snag that sucker. Like all quality vintage stuff it'll only get more valuable as it gets older.;)
 
#2 sounds better. not sure if it sounds 1000 dollars better but it's better. just sounds louder and punchier really. you can't get the same result with the L1?

i also wasn't able to use voxchat.

Dude, have you been talking to my wife?

I don't know how to describe it, and it honestly is the first time that I've thought the mp3 encoding made a difference on anything I've mucked up, but when I'm listening to a bunch of my tunes running through this, they all sound a ton better... Maybe I'm not using the L1 correctly, but that stuff just seems to add (or bring out) a gritty harshness that plagues me, and this box doesn't. For all the time I've jacked around with mixes with EQ and everything else, adding dither noise and dsp crap...then to have a pretty dramatic GOOD change happen with so little effort...yeah, I'd pay $1,000 for that. I don't spend much on me, really...okay, now I'm just rationalizing...
