i'm playing in a 12'x12' room. the drums and desk take up most of that.

That was my verbose way of saying "it's a good idea" combined with "experiments aren't only for lab technicians" :D.
 
reminds me of when i was about 16. i was in a band that practiced in my garage. we recorded a few songs using one of those tascam cassette recorders. we put it in my dad's van and ran the mic cables into it. excellent control room. :p

I've been using the recorderman approach - works great - now if only I could play! I had a real drummer over last weekend and that made a huge difference, as it turns out.
 
my only complaint was that the toms weren't getting picked up loud enough by the two OH's. I received two TM211's that I bought on ebay for $50 and it solved that, AND i don't have mic stands filling the 3' between the front of the kit and the chair that i sit in at my desk.

i was totally discouraged with recording music for the last couple of months because my drum sounds have always been shit. that's fixed and i've recorded drums for two songs in the last few days. stoked right now.
