Why the Gibson SG is the best guitar ever....

Which Ric ya got?

I have a Rickenbacker 620, 6 string. I picked it up for $650 and it was pretty much brand new, not a scratch on it. I didn't know too much about Ric's back then, but now I'm really glad I got one of the solid body ones. The hollow body Rics just don't seem to have the same full sound of most other hollows. The 620 is great though: beautiful sound, shrill cutting leads with pleanty of highs and mids (lows are slightly lacking, but for the styles I play it hits the perfect tonal range). Plays great, feels great, love it love it. If you find one, play it, fall in love with it, and buy it.

Hey Systemovadown - I'm 19, so not too far off your own age.

I'd agree that SG's are some of the greatest guitars ever made. I have an SG junior I put a custom P90-style humbucker in on and it is fantastic. A really warm yet crunchy tone.

My favourite guitar at the moment though is the wood effect single humbucker (bridge) I built. Then again, last week it was my Tele. And the week before it was my LP.......

I HATE SG's. They feel like you're playing a board with some strings attached; not a full, beautiful instrament. The tone is bland and dull. I happen to think they're ugly and cringe when I see bands playing them (though this is more due to the fact that I just hate them). And most of all, if we're talking Gibson, the price is most definately not great. For $1,149.99 you can get so many other great, awesome guitars that are actually priced that high for their quality, not just because Gibson feels like jacking up the price. Ric's, Gretch's, Carvins, Fenders, tons of great guitars are in this price range, and why anybody would blow all that money on some bland, boring hunk of wood is beyond me.

I prefer guitars that give a full, rich sound, and you can feel the wood and the craftmanship add to the tone. Les Pauls (which, beyond sounding bad, are bulky as hell) and SG's just have boring, straight tone that takes all the fun out of playing. I love hollow bodies, they give a heavy, full, vibrant tone that is unmatched, especially Gretch's. Strats give a great jazz sound, and the feel while playing with them (especially the maple necks, mmmm) is amazing. My Charvelle/Jackson PS-4 is a wonderful Charvelle style sound, because unlike similar Ibanez's, it gives a smoother, jazzy tone that I just love. Don't even get my started on my Ric; it's so beautiful I don't even wanna play it, just hang it on my wall in a glass case. The awesome rock sound is just amazing, and cuts through like no other. Solos burn like mad, and the thing just plays so awesome, I love it love it love it! There are just so many great guitars out there, I wish people would expand their horizons a little instead of just settling on the standard les pauls or SG's, bleh.

Glad you love 'em, so do I.

You obviously never played a quality SG or you just can't play. I have owned at least 20 top guitars, PRS, Fender, Ibanez etc. And the one guitar that won my heart is the 61 Re-Issue SG. It is by far the nicest sounding and feeling guitar I have ever played, beyond a doubt....

I like strats i have 2 american standards and would take them over a SG any day but thats just me...

I had a 67 Gibson SG that sounded spectacular. I ended up selling it because I took it into a shop after the neck cracked and was told it was broken at least 4 times before and it would cost a ton to get it fixed. Still got $500 for it on ebay! Now I have a LP Studio. No matter what you try, you can't get as much chug from an SG as you can from a LP.

In 1964, my father (wise man that he was) gave me a choice - a new guitar or my driver's license. I took the guitar, an SG - then also called a Les Paul SG with the old type vibrato. Money did not flow like water then and an SG replacement for a Sears Silvertone was a strong incentive. I never regretted making that choice. Good deal for me and my dad didn't sit home nights waiting for that phone call about his sixteen year old and the car.
That cherry red SG looked like a million dollars, complemented by the yellow-orange case liner. Good tone and great action, it took me a long way. Who knows if I would have stayed as interested without it.

Santana played one(Woodstock), Robby Krieger of the Doors, Jerry Garcia and many others of the 60's golden age of rock.

Now that my twelve year old is an aspiring keyboard player, I might just pull off the same deal with him.

Nice story. I enjoyed reading that, Frank:)

yup, agreed, SG's are officially the ugliest guitars ever made. haha just kidding, they are not bad (but that red and black one that Angus young has.... well that's just ugly). Anyways, the bass player in my old band had an SG copy made by yamaha. it was a lot heavier than a gibson but man it was definately top 3 in guitars i have ever played. The only better i have played are my Fender american deluxe strat, and my uncle's guild.

I just got a 1973 SG std that is a tone monster, and all original. Way cool guitar, classic look, classic sound, buttery feel, easy to play...whats not to like?:)

H2H

I used to be a die hard SG/Les Paul fan, then a few years ago I discovered that Ibanez makes some guitars that have the same sound and play a whole lot better/easier, what can I say, I like them thin necks.
