Hey I just thought of something. If one band can suck so bad that they are responsible for the 'destruction' of an entire genre, then thats pretty amazing. I always thought that bands that suck just faded into obscurity eventually, as opposed to having such a massive effect.

Of course there's a good chance that someone already pointed this out, because this thread is clearly stuck in a loop.

This thread started off fucking stupid. Its repeated resurrection, continuation and erm...repetition, has succeeding in pushing it beyond any boundaries of stupidity that I have ever seen in any thread ever...

We should be proud. Not only has this become the dumbest thread on the bbs...It is also quite possibly the dumbest thing on the internet ever.

I would say MTV. They had headbangers ball.............at 2.a.m.

Videos cheapen That type of music. It really made a lot of bands look silly.

UUUGGH....the 80's.....

It's all subjective. When I say "metal" I am nowhere near the 80's. THat is the most frustrating thing about liking metal. People automatically think I'm talking about the 80's stuff with big hair, make up, and spadex, when in reality I am talking about what that has evolved into. Metal was literally in it's infancy in the 80's, and the look and the flashiness is evidence of it. Since then, it has matured greatly and is more then capable of earning respect from a purely musical perspective. No shred, no flash, no pomp, no posing needed...anymore.

You know what else is totally subjective? Heaviness for the sake of being heavy. To me, that refers to the blackest of black metal, extreme grind core with 90% blast beats, and the growliest of death metal vocals, all with notes blazing by so fast you'd have to use a new pick for every song. But...to you.....heavy for the sake of being heavy could be Linkin Park.

Even the word "heavy" cannot be defined in a way that everyone will agree with. For example, to me, Carcass' Heartwork is some of the heavist shit EVER. To others, that album is a sell-out piece of crap.

What was Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, and Judas Preist. Weren't they all around in 70's?

What killed metal? I think the self seriousness of the Metallicas as well as the silly hucksterism of the worst of the hair bands did it in a way. But, always, in the end it's the five zillion bands who copy one of THE bands that does it. I know what killed grunge was all the freakin' idiots copying Pearl Jam. The same thing happened with all the freaking idiots copying Motley Crue.

They were hard rock. :D

Those bands, while deserving of all the praise they get, were not metal IMO. They were showing the potential for metal, and gave a few early groups the inspiration to become metal, but they thenselves were hard rock.

Metal was born in 1983.

Growling vocals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now if you can sing you're not metal? Fuck that.

Phil Anselmo, IMO, epitomized the best of both worlds - he could sing very well and yet could also scream better than most, and he knew when to use each tecnique at the right time. His ability seems to be rare...(Listen to his work on Cemetery Gates, or Hollow, or any Pantera for that matter. Not that he's not still doing this with Down, I'm just not familiar with their music.) What I cannot stand in todays metal, for one, is the monotone screaming that is the same through every verse and then the same again in the next song. It's just dull and to me it reeks of a huge lack of talent. And the ones that grunt in a deep, low muffle - those guys are seriously just goofy. Who could get into listening to that? Most people I know that also like a lot of heavy music can't understand it either. Oh well. I'm waiting for the next turn which will hopefully bring back talent to the metal genre.

I know exaclty what you mean. The growly thing is very one dimensional and get's boring quickly...but there are many many people out there that feel the growly vocal is what makes the music what it is. IMO, combining good singing with a growly screamy thing, when done well, is the shizznit.

"Today's metal" includes some really amazing stuff...the talent is here. It doesn't need to "come back". The problem is with the audience and marketing. If talent and good music were the product, people would buy it. But the product is most often an image and an attitude.

I think the real questiuon isn't who destoryed metal (because Metal lives... Metal is forever), but rather, who is destroying the mind of millions of people. and the answer is Emo Bands, and pop culture... and Rap.

I don't think I've ever, in my life, heard someone say that Iron Maiden isn't metal.

Seriously?

They're not!!

Everyone knows that Duran Duran was the greatest metal band of all time!!

And Slayer had some of the best love songs ever recorded!

FYI - Maiden knows more about metal than than Alternica and Godsmack will ever achive in their lifetimes

Maybe we should worry less about who destroyed metal and focus our attention on how we destroy emo music.

metal is dead, right.?? Shouldn't this thread be titled, " What did the autospy reveal?" :)

Maybe Keifer Sutherland's h**d up metal's ass.?? Holding the headstock of a gibson guitar.

IMO...yes. Seriously. They ALMOST...very nearly....were on the verge of being metal. They gave momentum to the bands that were growing into metal (slayer...metallica...ect..) and they do deserve all the credit they get. Metal would not be if it were not for Maiden. But Maiden is not metal.

It's like....a 1963 Ferarri GTO....damn nice race car in it's day. But now, it's just not a race car. It's a piece of nostalgia. It LEAD to the greatest racing machinery ever....but it itself is not the greatest racing machine ever.
