zed10r, you always go to bat for metal in this thread. I gotta give you your props for that. You are consistent.

You're not so bad yourself, Cephus....

In short, Metal killed itself.

10-15 years ago, 90% of these "bands" on Headbangers Ball or whatever would have NEVER gotten a record deal.

Technology has made these CRAP bands able to make records/videos very cheap . And cheaper for the industry too.

When I watch HBB, there might be 2 or 3 newer bands worth crap. Most is just rehashed Metallica riffage and that TERRIBLE "hardcore" singing, Pantera wannabees....like the host Jamie's band...just terrible.

On the other end of this talentless spectrum is the noodle-riffers that just play fast, technical garbage that put nothing into songwriting. I wouldn't buy one of these cd's if 15 bucks fell out of my arse.

Dime pretty much solidified drop D tuning back in early 90's, but when he did it, it was for a purpose...now it's just used to be "heavy", and it sounds terrible and muddy.

Just droptune it down to D and scream. Awful.

Canned response...next!

Seriously, all this black metal stuff is taking over the scene, because noone is doing anything with real substance anymore, and all the so called singers are doing the exact same thing - monotone screaming and bellowing. Some of them sound like they think they are giants or ogres or something, and to me ( yeah, it's just my opinion, so piss off if you don't like it!) it is ridiculous. It's comical and makes me think of them as a bunch of bitter, wanna-be evil dorks, who if they hadn't found a way to get noticed making stupid overdone metal noise, they would still be counting hit points in their mom's kitchen and calling each other by medieval nicknames. Fucking seriously...Take away the long hair, the black tough guy outfits, and the tat sleeves, and what've you got? Bunch of knobs trying too hard and ruining the genre with their nonsense. It's a major nerd sausage party disguised as cool. In another five years, thanks to these clowns, you'll have to actually sacrifice yourself to Satan onstage just to compete. What's the point?????

Pantera beats them all, again in my opinion. You don't have to agree. I could give a shit.

That right there identifies one the biggest problems. You are suposed to LISTEN to music...not LOOK at it. It seems like people have forgotten that.

well personaly I blame Nirvana and the entire bullshit grunge movement for not only the death of metal but also intelligent and talented musicianship.
Heres one Whats red and white and has more brains than kurt cobain?
THE WALL THAT WAS BEHIND HIM!!! lol
GOD BLESS SMITH AND WESSON

Nirvana had solos, so did Pearl Jam. STP, not so much, but Velvet Underground does . . . 'cause Slash kicks ass

Huh? Did I miss something... when did Slash play in the VU? He was pretty young then I bet....

(although I agree, the Velvet Underground solos did kick ass, it just wasnt Slash =] )

He's gotta mean Velvet Revolver....with that terrible singer...I can't stand that dude...ruins the band.

Whoever got Guitar Mags back in the early 90's knows exactly what happened to Metal.......Grunge.

I cringed at every new issue until it became too much to take.

It was like today's school text books...instead of making you smarter, they made you dumber.

You went from learning scales and licks to learning those worthless octave "chords" and other junk like that.

They went from tabbing "Holy Wars" to "Black Hole Sun".....yep....that was shortly before I went to prison for 3 years... I couldn't take it.

You call what Nirvana had....solos????? Oh fuck me. That's like saying myhatbroke has brains.

the singer ruins the band? what about every other no talent musician in the band?

the singer is the only memorable part of the band in my opinion.

They blow equally together. It's just another meeting of washed up has-beens. The music is a either totally GNR, or totally STP. Rehab ruined them both, IMO...

I think the main thing nobody has mentioned is that music never dies.
No genre has ever "died". Fads come and go, however the music was there before, and it will be there after.
Behtoven is still being played and enjoyed by many, so are cheesy 80's ballads, 90's grunge and nowadays hip-hop.
Just cause you're not exposed to it doenst mean it died.

Well why'd you have to go and ruin our hopes like that? We want some of it to go away forever. I personally can think of hundreds of songs that the world would be better off without, and that's just me.

Yer right, though. It's a shame.

did i miss something? why is bad religion on the pool?

kinda like asking if james dean was good at classical.

are any of thoes bands metal bands?
i guess korn is. nirvana is ceritnally not metal, and when they were big metal was selling very good.
not to mention that none of the current metal bands base thier sound what so ever on what nirvana did.
how could it be thier fault.
pearl jam was a blues band.
bon jovi is straight pop
and stryper was only metal to 4 or 5 15year old kids in the 80's.

korn is the only possible answer, and it not like they didn't have a few good songs. hell, a few really kicked ass.

1. metal killed its self.

but the suiside was assisted by metallica (not that they didn't stomp ass when they were younger)

2. blast beats put it out of it's misery.

new metal bands are all rythm, and nothing else. just playgrounds for AMAZING drummers.
boring guitar work all around though.

side note....
i think the maden thing may be on it's way back, in a new incarnation.
we'll see

Yeah, I knew who he meant, I just don't like to be reminded of the fall of Slash (I have an idea, go colaborate with american idol! :P )

And I have to disagree, music does die. Sure, we can still listen to Beethoven, and the Beatles will probably never leave, but I'm pretty sure that an insane amount of music has been lost to the ages. Even just recently with the switch from lp/cassette/cd. How many vinyl albums were never re-released? And why the f*** has the Traveling Willburys not been moved over to the new medium? They'll be gone... gone forever!!!

Oh, that was pleasant. Personally, I salute Nirvana and the entire Grunge movement for being just that - a movement, in a new direction. Give me that any day over the formulaic, posing, hair and complete gayness that Metal ever pertained to.
