I've got a couple pieces of gear from way beck when, when I had little money and less sense. (one of those things is now different :) ) I'm trying to decide what to sell and if either is worth keeping.

I have a PreSonus Blue Max Smart Comp and a Behringer Composer just sitting in my racks. I have fallen in love with what I can do with my dbx 160XT's, 166xl's and my pair of RNC's. So should I:

a) sell/trade one or both the PreSonus and Behringer
b) keep one or the other
c) keep both as momentos of earlier, worse sounding, times

Seriously, do either of these units have any fans out there who can talk me into keeping them?

Thanks.
Nate

Keep the ones you use. Sell the ones you don't. Unless you believe there is a high likelihood you will need them in the near future. This isn't some life-altering decision here. :D

If you don't really use them, try and trade them. you will probably get more value out of them in a trade towards something else. If you decide to keep just one of them, I would keep the Behringer actually. Their compressors are one of the only things of theirs that may be worth having that actually passes signal.

How Kooky.....I have the Blue Max and the Composer, too. Right now they're just sittin makin it look like I have more equipment. :D

The Behringer does have some pretty lights, tho......

Keep what you are using and sell what you are not using, as Chessrock said.

I have a policy that if I don't use something for a certain amount of time, and don't forsee needing it in the future, I remove it from the studio. I'll let it sit for a while longer in kind of a "cooling off" period, and if I really don't use it anymore I'll eBay it. There's no point in having unused gear cluttering up your studio space. And, what you are doing as well is basically tying up money in equipment you are not using, money that could go toward gear you *would* use.

I also store gear that I know I will need, but not necessarily use all the time. Like my gear for playing live gigs. I have two complete live keyboard rigs that I keep stored, and which I will not get rid of, because when I need them I really need them.

So there is basically no value in holding on to gear you aren't using or have upgraded out of. I would choose "A", sell both the older compressors.

Both of these compressors are worth about $20. I say give them to some young kid starting out, or to a elementary school as a donation.

I Concur. Hey, now that i think of it, im some young kid just starting out.

I second most of the folks here .... if you aren't using it then dont keep it .... BUT I also second xstatic about the Composer only because it wont be worth much and more than the compression (which is nothing special but its ok) the gates in these units are pretty darn good, albeit basic.

If you never use gates or have others then the charity route is not a bad idea.

I second the "remove it from the studio, but don't sell it yet" theory. You never know when you'll need a lo-fi compressor for something and the resale value isn't so high that you can't afford to keep them. I have a couple ART Tube EQ that I concider selling every couple years, but- sure enough- as soon as I start thinking about it they come in SO handy for something that I decide its worth letting them collect dust for a couple more years.

Take care,
Chris

The problem with this idea is that if I adopt it, I have about 12 guitars, 4 basses, a pedal steel guitar, two cars, pictures of ex-girlfriends...etc. that I'd have to part with ;)

I think I'll see if I can find a home for them through ebay or at the local swap-shop and put the money towards another 160XT.

Don't forget the free ads section here. Hey, I'll take that Composer off your hands if the price is right!

MAN what are you talking about??? the blue max rocks!!

Blue Max rocks? Maybe if you don't have much experience with other gear, or for certain specific sounds.

every sound is specific. what is that supposed to mean?

on bass I prefer a dbx but for vocals and overheads the blue max is very good.

The Blue Max to me is kind of a dirty compressor. It seems to snip the high and low Freq's off of sound sources. It certainly would not be a compressor I would use very often, but even cheap gear has its place in nice racks. I guess it's important to consider that I have a lot of nice compressors at my place so I can afford to be picky like that. In general though, if I had to choose today between a Blue Max and a Behringer, I would choose the Behringer.
